The depth chart rankings are up for debate amongst all members of the Red and White community. Ive started the process, but the process has been enriched by posters such as Rogue Swan, MCS and Wolftone.
I would like you to help Dosser. Help me answer the key questions:
1) Is Tom Mitchell ahead of Craig Bird in the inside midfield extracter rankings?
2) Is X Richards ahead of Aliir in the tall defender rankings?
You can also rank two teams on the one depth chart. If one team has more players at the top of the positional ranking, then that team should win.Comment

Inside midfield extractors are the guys who play closest to the ruckman. They often pick the ball up or wrestle for it in tight. Most of their possessions are hard ball gets. They are usually not noted for their hard running in open field or their pace. They are usually strong, big bodied and can withstand a high degree of physical pressure. Josh Kennedy, Jobe Watson, Sam Mitchell and Scott Selwood are the great extractors in the game.
Running Inside / Outside midfielders are dual purpose midfielders who do some work in tight, some work in the open, they provide a high degree of running endurance and can sometimes break the lines. Examples include Patrick Dangerfield, K.Jack, Luke Hodge, Hanners, Scott Pendulbury, Daniel Wells, Chris Judd, Nat Fyfe and Garry Ablett.
Fast Outside midfielders
These are the guys who have electric pace and break the lines. They don't usually extract the ball and are the guys on the end of the long handballs. They are noted for their ability to spread and do their best work in space. Examples include Stephen Hill, Brad Hill, Issac Smith, Lewis Jetta, Daniel Motlop, and a host of Port Adelaide midfielders.
The depth chart uses these three different midfield categories to rank the Swans midfielders.Comment

The depth chart will become fait accomplis when David King or Alistir Lynch start using it. It's only a matter of time as all innovative US sports ideas eventually make their way to Australian sports.Comment

The depth chart is derived from US sports where it's shown live and constantly updated on a clubs website. I believe the depth chart can be even more interesting for AFL analysis because AFL players are rotated through multiple positions and can be assessed on those different positions.
