I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time -
I was a little disappointed in the performances of Hiscox and Brandon Jack. I like electric players as everyone knows, but you also need composure under pressure. They both stuffed up a lot of their possessions. Brandon Jacks tackling was aggressive and effective.
Dan Robinson has had positive raps. Maybe he just had a bad game.
Heeney looked physically able to match it. It was funny seeing him push Daniel Merritt who is one of the most physically imposing players in the AFL. I think you will be able to use Heeney in the middle as an extractor type this season. He could very easily rise above Tom Mitchell and Craig Bird in the midfield extractor depth chart positions. He is better by foot than Mitchell and has better speed to spread from the contest.Comment

Overall disappointing even when taking into account that it's the first hit out for the year.
Solid from several of the key midfielders, however a number of fringe players failed to register on the impact scale which disappointed.
Kick ins look a real worry, might need to be McVeigh moving back.
Highlights for me - Heeney looks like he has all the attributes and will play plenty of seniors this year, Naismith shows a bit in ruck and has a future, Rampe is a ripper being one of those rare players who has time, space and composure even in situations where he has no right to get out of.
Next week will be more revealing.Comment

robo is obviously strong in games at training but I dont think he is the long term winner for the small forward
that is not just based on this performance"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Clearly a good game for blowing out the cobwebs.
Encouraged with the play of a number of the senior regulars Rampe took another step up I think, Grundy was excellent and seems fitter than for years. Bird is in good nick, Jetta was classy and effective, KJ was excellent. Joey was excellent, Pykey looked fit. Rhyce Shaw is still quick.
A few that didn't seem to be in great touch were Smith, C'ham, Reid. Rohan didn't seem to do much after the first part of the game, not sure that he was benched for some reason.Seemed to be concentrating on a stopping role more than attack.Plenty of time to find touch.
Mitchell and Hanners were serviceable but not great against a very strong midfield (now one of the best in the competition I think).
Pleasantly impressed with the performance of fringe players such as Towers and Naismith. Think this might be Sam's year, won some really good hitouts against quality senior opposition and can actually jump. Not bad around the ground either.
BJ was OK and yes, needs to make better decisions about kicking to advantage, XR I think did his job as a defender but did not stand out in general play. Daniel Robinson looked alright but had some bad luck and will be better for the experience.
Of the newbies; Heeney can play, has great poise and balance but is not a speed machine without being slow, Hiscox now knows senior level football and the skills he must work on, Toby likewise has senior experience and showed he can mix it at times, Melican showed good skills, game reading ability and poise but needs to grow into his body a bit.
I presume that next week the other youngsters will be played. Pity it is not televised, however I am expecting that Jones, Aliir and Hewett to show that they will be senior options. Hoping that Abe Davis and Sean McLaren can also step up.
Overall very impressed with the Lions midfield now that they have Rich back and Beams as well. Their Achilles heel is that they are not blessed with KPPs and we did not test them out in that area by not playing Franklin, Tippet and Ted.
Not in the slightest concerned about the hitout, we are a month behind the Lions in training and this was their second hitout to our first. Bring on the season proper! We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

Truthfully? @@@@e! He had 1 mark, Five Disposals and 14 HO in four quarters. I think that constitutes @@@@e! Started badly last year too but he had injuries. Naismith came on mid third quarter and picks up 11 HO & 2 disposals, one goal assist. All of which were pretty good by the way.Comment

I heard Longmire on the radio the day before the game say that he was happy the season was starting late because it gave us more time to catch the other sides on fitness. Hawthorn got a decent hiding by the Pies, lets not forget. Last season we were very scratchy starting the season and after a couple of rounds we were destined for the bottom 4. It was a "practice match" and Brisbane need to be up and about because their membership is poor and the coach wants to put his stamp on the side. 4 weeks is a long time in footy, and we did have a few handy players out.Comment

Heeney and Mitchell are different types Matt. I think there's room for them both. Harry will have to pull his socks up if he wants to play first game. Birdie was crap too. Last two seasons he has started the season very slowly. I thought when Towers got the pill he was pretty impressive the only problem is a couple of times he did some really clever stuff and BJ and then Robbo stuffed up his good work. I thought he was solid. There are probably going to be a few missing come round one so look for the real improver's in the squad. Next week I think we might just get a look at Aliir and Jones. Maybe James Rose and Abe Davis. I think Naismith will get another go but not as sub and Toby might just have a rest. It all depends on Buddy and Goodsie playing. If they don't then either Toby or McLaren play seeing Sam misses out.
I think Heeney needs to be in the midfield from round one. He does not need to do an apprenticeship in the subs vest or as an auxiliary forward. He is born to play in the centre square like Parker and Kennedy and should be aloud to shine early in that role like Chris Judd was.
A agree with your thoughts on Towers. I thought he was very composed. He certainly has positioned himself ahead of other quick speedy forward types like Brandon Jack, Hiscox and Robinson.
This is my round one team based on a very small sample of play. I'm assuming Tippett would not be ready for round one.
B Rampe T. Richards Smith
HB Rohan Grundy Jetta
C Heeney K.Jack Hannas
HF McVeigh Reid Towers
F Goodes Franklin McGlynn
Fol Pyke Kennedy Parker
Inter Mitchell Lloyd Cunningham

I think a player that will probably become extremely important for us this year and going forward because of his poise and excellent delivery is Jake Lloyd. Who would have thought we'd be saying that this time last year! He unlike a lot of our mids doesn't seem to waste his disposals all too often and seems to have that uncanny ability to find space! With natural improvement for a young player and hopefully no more injuries he may just become another swans great! Here's hoping anyway!Comment

I will this ever stop
I think Mitchell and Heeney can be in the same team, but not Bird, Heeney, and Mitchell. I see Bird as being the casualty of the rise of Heeney. Bird's form according to some Red and White people is notably poor during the pre-season. If Bird does not make the round 1 senior team and Mitchell and Heeney fire, then it will be hard for him to get backHe had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment
