Hi folks
Remember this? Donating our Premiership Club MCG ticket to the refugee resource centre
We're doing it again for round 8 vs Hawks on May 23rd. If anyone is interested in joining our little social initiative read on..
What we're doing
We put together individual 'packs', each of which comprises your MCG ticket, an MCG food/beverage voucher (about $25 face value), a club scarf (about $25) and a myki travel card. We then donate these packs to people who simply cannot afford to go to the footy, ever. And off to the footy they go and they don't have to pay a cent and have all the trappings we get when we go as well.
Last year, we sent four people from a refugee centre (ASRC). Two were from Fiji and two were from Africa. Take a look at the response. ASRC Letter to Dan, Dave, Brooke & Ned.pdf
The centre sorted out final logistics - we just came up with the goods and made it happen.
Background/context
The idea was for a few of us Sydney members to offer our match tickets another group of people who, because of their socioeconomic circumstances, could never have afforded to go to a game. We chose a refugee centre in Melbourne simply because we felt that sport, particularly our great game of Aussie rules, would be the ultimate ice breaker - a cultural and personal welcome of sorts. The choice of was not political at all, in fact, this time around, we can widen it.
This time around
I think we can easily add a second option to support, such as a youth refuge such as the Salvos Accommodation & Refuge ? salvos.org.au/ or Hope Street Hope Street Youth and Family Services - Home
How it can play out
It's geared towards Premiership Club members (they get a free ticket to a Swans game at the MCG) who cannot make the game but don't want to let their freebie go to waste. We supplied our tickets plus the rest of the pack so it cost us about $55 each last time (ticketing fee plus the scarf/voucher). If you are going to the game but want to support anyway, or are not a member, you could instead contribute towards the add on (say $25). I'll tally numbers and allocate towards either the scarf or the voucher to create complete packs. The myki cards are supplied by the centre as they get them free. If you're a Melbourne-based member and can't make the game, no reason why you can't include your seats like the PC members.
Here is a simple approach:
The Club has pledged support
Jenny has offered kids packs and caps and will assist with some logistics (such as arranging vouchers and delivery or merchandise).
They have no scarves but that's ok because last time, we split the packs between Hawks and Swans so the small group of folks who went had alternative teams to barrack for. It worked like a treat. More on the response from that night can be found here: Happy Nice note from ASRC Melbourne following Swans vs Hawks match
What you need to do
Make a pledge (either ticket, add on or full pack) on this thread and I'll coordinate all logistics with the centres, Jenny at the Club as well as the venue. Closer to the day, I'll put you in contact with the people involved, because it's good to form a personal connection on this I think.
Also, any other ideas anyone has are very welcome.
Take care
Dan

Here is a simple approach:
- Choose your type of charity - either a refugee centre or youth refuge
- Pledge either a ticket, an add on or a whole pack
- I'll allocate the pledges to create the packs and remedy any shortfalls
