I would of taken 6 years, but I'll also take to the end of 2018.

Even if he chooses to go home then, we will have had 10 years service from him and 200ish games as well, so we couldn't possibly complain about that.

Interesting that afl.com.au is reporting a "huge" deal until the end of 2021 (does that year seem so futuristic or what??).

That would mean Hanners contract will end a year before Buddy's!

If going for six years means we pay a little less per year, which is how these long term contracts seem to work, I'm fine with that.

Our cap must be really tight considering Buddy's jumps next year. Assuming that Tippett will be taking less going forward but we no longer have the luxury of offloading a lot of fringe players to save cap space because we have little depth and we are already running the minimum 38 senior players.

Swans set to reveal long-term deal for red-hot mid - AFL.com.au

Doubt the AFL website would be running with the 2021 story if it wasn't true but Neil Cordy is normally pretty spot on with this type of stuff

We always knew it was going to get pretty tight per say cap wise - but it also wouldn't surprise me if we are trying to eek out a bit of cap room, to allow us to top up maybe next year, maybe in a couple of years, with another high profile recruit to fill a gaping hole (key position defender for instance or in the ruck).

I would also argue that rather than having 'little depth', we have reasonable depth - but it is of the 'untested' type. We have had a very settled top 22 overall over an extended period, thus limiting the opportunities for the younger players to stand up and get opportunities. That isn't to say that some of them can't make the grade and do their job if called upon - we just don't get to see very often whether they do.

The current TV Rights Deal expires at the end of 2016 and if you believe the financial press the per year deal should rise from $250M per year to $400M. If we assume about 60% of the increase ($90M) goes to the players via the salary cap then we should see the cap rise by approx $5M per club.

Which, surprise surprise, co-incides with when Buddy's earnings spike

Our cap may appear tight but I believe Buddy's deal was a calculated gamble based on the next TV deal - with an extra $5M per ckub his contract may be pretty standard for top line Franchise type players - for example I reckon Fyffe's next deal will be bigger than Buddy.

I would also expect that many of re the deals re-negotiated are lower in 2016 than 2017 to allow for the spike.

All the same I would think we'd be pretty tight for space for next season but thereafter we should be fine. Whether it forces us to offload a player this year against our will remains to be seen.

Could be another piece of salary cap and list management genius by the best in the business

Add in Mills and Dunkley next year, plus Jones and Hewet with additional pre-seasons under their belts and I think our depth will be fine

Yeh it's easy to look at our depth and think it's not at the same level as Hawthorn's but it also needs to be remembered that they'll be losing a lot more top end talent due to retirements in the next 2-3 seasons than us.

Our retirements by the end of 2017 will most likely be:

                    - Goodes
                    - Shaw
                    - Pyke
                    - Richards
                    - McGlynn

                    Hawthorn's will most likely be:

                    - Mitchell
                    - Hodge
                    - Lake
                    - Hale
                    - Burgoyne
                    - Gibson

Ours look much more replaceable than theirs

With the club clearly in re-signing mode, and we have to assume they want to keep Jetta, you would have to think that the longer he doesn't re-sign is a sign he is seriously thinking of leaving. We may well not be able to afford him....

And before the usual suspects come up attacking me this is just my opinion....
