New AFL concessions for Vic teams

The AFL has announced that controversial salary cap concessions to Brisbane and Sydney are to be matched by even larger concessions for Victorian clubs.

?It makes sense really,? said new AFL Politburo chief, Andrew ?Andy? Demetriou. ?For the long term health of the game, we need to give players an incentive to turn up at clubs that have no chance of winning a premiership and train and play in dodgy weather for most of the year.

?We simply can?t have players looking to get the first plane to Brisbane or Perth or Sydney or Adelaide, where they have a genuine chance of winning a flag and the sun shines.?

It is believed Collingwood will receive particularly large concessions, offering the club hefty League-sanctioned financial incentives with which to try and convince players to put up with the steely glare of coach Mick Malthouse, the hot air of President Eddie McEverywhere and the sheer trauma of representing the black and white, especially in September.

Victorian club officials welcomed the news. ?We?ve been saying for a while that the northern concessions were unfair. We have to try to stop kids born in East Malvern or Doncaster from getting north or west any way they can,? said a spokesman.

An independent League audit of the Victorian clubs recently concluded that a Melbourne or Geelong based team has a realistic shot of winning a flag for ?no time in the foreseeable future?, interpreted by League officials as the next 30-40 years.

Brisbane is expected to win all the flags over that time period.
