'Respect': AFL fans unite with standing ovation for absent star Adam Goodes - 9news.com.au
Hi all,
As KTigers? donation of 1000 T-shirts yesterday was probably the most significant gesture that RWO has made I?m reporting back on its effectiveness.
Thanks to the wonderful Margo for helping me deliver the boxes to the SCG and to Liz and O?Reilly Boy for being there when we arrived. And thanks too to our non RWO volunteers Tracy and Emily for your work and enthusiasm ? and being there on time. And thanks to Kylie from the Cheer Squad and Teo the Swans' match day organiser.
At 1pm Margo and I met KTigers and his wife at their inner west factory and picked up 10 boxes of T-shirts in various sizes. Traffic wasn?t bad so we were at the SCG around 1.30. I dropped 200 T-shirts at Gate 7 for the Member function then met Liz and O?Reilly Boy and the others outside Gate C and we quickly emptied the cars and set up towards the bus stop behind the VW tent.
The players were just arriving so, as I rushed to get the car to the carpark, I nearly ran over Buddy. (I hardly bruised his back, honest.) The other players were all arriving then, too and I reckon if you were a serious gambler you could watch the players arrival and know the results of the game. They all looked relaxed but purposeful, as if they were on a bit of a mission. I expected to pick up our empty boxes afterwards so I was directed to park next to Buddy?s giant Jeep.
Over at boxes all were set up by sizes by the time I got back, thanks largely I think to Liz? organising. This was still just after 2pm and at first we had a trickle of requests then a flood. We also attracted Ch7 and Ch9 TV crews and they filmed and interviewed us ? and so did the SMH. The condition for getting a T-shirt was that you put it on immediately and wore it for the whole afternoon.
Leaving the team, I had 200 shirts to hand out at the function. Walking down Driver Ave it was a sea of red 37s that was great to see. I arrived at the event as Gary Rohan was being interviewed on stage. He?s engaged and going to be married on Hamilton island and when asked ?who?s your best man?? he replied ?Lewis Jetta, but he doesn?t know it yet?. You heard it here first, Lewis.
As Gary was going to be interviewed at half time I gave him a shirt but he said that he thought he?d have to wear his team shirt. But next up was Micky O? and I gave the interviewer one to give him. Meanwhile the Swans staff were handing out the shirts as people came in.
Micky came on stage and was immediately presented with his shirt. He said he was overwhelmed when he walked on stage to see a wall of 37 shirts in front of him. He spoke well and positively about Adam and gave the impression that he?d definitely be back ?just so they don?t win, for one thing?.
As he came off stage I gave him another shirt to give to Adam and he said he would. That was the most important shirt of all. When Magic came onto the ground as captain of the Legends team he was wearing the shirt ? and for the game - changed to a club No 37 guernsey. Great minds KTigers.
Walking back down Driver Ave it was again still a sea of 37 and when I gave one to Koori TV I was interviewed for their Monday evening news.
The guard of honour that the team ran through had about 50% wearing our shirts. It was a powerful statement. And some were hung over the upper balconies and throughout the CS. I hope it showed enough on TV (it certainly did at the ground)? The handout featured on last night?s Ch9 news and in the SMH online reports yesterday so presumably the Sun Herald today.
As there was a crowd of 38,000 yesterday, only 1 in 38 had a shirt and I think we got pretty good exposure. I hope others agree?
Firstly and finally a huge vote of thanks to KTigers ? you can be sure that your support was noted and welcome by the club and players and, through Mickey, Adam himself.
