VFL Semi Final 2: Aspley Hornets v Sydney Swans Reserves @ Graham Road

    NEAFL 2015 Semi Final 2

Aspley Hornets v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Saturday 5th September 2015
    12.00pm
    Graham Road

After waiting all year to successfully avenge their 2014 Grand Final loss, the Reserves find themselves in a little Groundhog Day situation. They play the same team at the same venue at the same starting time. However, due to some injuries the Swans will not be fielding the same lineup, having lost 3 listed players from last week's team. Aspley will be highly motivated this week and keen not to repeat their last quarter fade out when they conceded 7 last quarter goals to relinquish a 10 point 3 quarter point lead and finish with a 20 point loss.

The winner of this clash will play the UWS Giants in a preliminary final next week for a spot in the granny.

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
    In:
Out: James ROSE (senior emergency), Abe DAVIS (senior emergency), Nic NEWMAN (elbow)

A listed player missing from each part of the ground - Newman in defence, Davis in midfield and Rose in attack. We'll need players like McLaren, Hiscox and Melican who have been relatively quiet as of late, to step up and contribute in their teammates' absences.

Taking Rose out of this side robs it of its leading goalkicker as well as one of its more creative forwards. Therefore the key to winning the game will come down to the quality of the Swans defence and their ability to restrict the Aspley lineup to a low enough score.

    Academy Players/Topups
In: Baron-Hay, Kilpatrick, McFadden, Osborne, Taylor, Wilson
    Out:
Jake BROWN, Harrison CARR, Eli PRESCOTT

Mills only played the 2nd half last week as the Swans take the conservative route in managing his comeback from injury. Behagg chipped in with a game high 3 goals while Hebron was stout in defence.

In last week's preview I highlighted 4 Aspley players I felt were crucial to their side's chances of success. 3 of those players in Matt Payne, Cheynee Stiller and Gavin Grose had good games but the one that crucially missed out was their dangerous forward Eddie Sansbury who was immacuately defended by Xavier Richards. Sansbury had the 6 disposals and just the one goal as Richards showed he is more than capable on playing on smaller forwards as well as taller ones. The Swans will require a repeat dose of Richards' performance this week if they are to win.

You would have to think that the potential rookies for next year, will come from the top ups playing (Mills excluded of course) in this game.

Last year our rookies came from around Australia. This year I doubt we'll select as many but I can't see why they'll all come from the NEAFL, let alone only from among our toppies.

Let me rephrase that, any of the academy boys we pick up will come from this list.

            Qtr time @AspleyFC 4.1 (25) @swansreserves 2.1 (13) Aspley goals: Sansbury 2 Holman Nelis. Swans goals: Derickx, Nankervis @neaflofficial

Under the pump for the majority of the quarter there, a goal on the siren to Nankervis makes the scoreline more tolerable. Midfield struggling to get clean ball amidst some strong tackling pressure from Aspley and forward line looks dysfunctional, in particular McLaren has made a few howlers.

Last week the forward line looked to be dysfunctional too, all game - until the last quarter when they swung Davis and Aliir up forward and were kicking with the wind.

Much better quarter with the midfield on top and rucks giving us good service. I think McGlynn's pressure has been great, caused consternation in their backline and created scoring opportunities, but also some of the topups have been fantastic, in particular McFadden and Behagg for me are competing really well.

A good second quarter from the Swans, some good play but just failed to convert, could easily have been 3 - 4 goals up.

Kicking out plan poor. Very reactive from the Swans. Extra tall forward, maybe Behagg (58 or 59) watching each and every contest getting out marked 2 to 1. Second to most contests.

Swans playing with 10 players around the ball and killed on the outside. If you think our club is well coached you are easy to please. We are lucky were are just 2 goals behind instead of 8. Marsh, X, Aliir and Melican keeping us in the game.

So if we lose this is it season over? Looking like a loss at the minute, will hurt our depth in the seniors during finals if the reserves aren't playing!
