    Just watched a 1999 game.....

    Talk about a footy lesson.

We all need to go back to the 'early' days every now and again to see what the game was like.
    When jumpers were baggy,
When the umps had no concept of head high, in the back, ducking, 15 meter rule.
    When there were no graphics
When the tv experts knew when to shut up and let you enjoy the game.
When KB knew the plays, knew the players names.
When handballs were relatively rare (yes even in 1999)
When they announced if there was a bench exchange.
When back then players may not get on the ground until after the third quarter from the bench (so much for our whinging at the sub rule, most of them played full 4 quarters)
When out of bounds was part of the game.
When they kicked like crazy, seeming to hit a target by accident rather than by design.
When Goodsey rucked (and he was very very good)
When players like Goodsey, Peb, Jude, Leo, et al had no biceps to speak of.
When (see above) made mistakes a plenty, and you realise they all, ALL, took time to develop into the players they became.
When MickeyO twisted and turned like a snake (god he was good)
When Plugger could part the seas (get out of my way son)
When Seymour couldn't get more handsome, same with Stafford and when Crouch was really quite good looking!
    When Cressa was just fine.
When you see Dunkley in action you realise just how fine a footy player he was, forget the kicking, it was Everything else.

When the crowd was at a constant roar because the ball was going up and down the ground at pace, and there were virtually no stoppages.

Anyone says the game hasn't changed is way off target.

Ah, I have kept vhs (awful quality, bad reception at the time, but copied to dvd) copies of swans games from 1997 onwards, and a couple of the 1996 ones as well. I generally dip in during the off season as I am not too good at being without footy for half of the year.

I understand this, I normally have to watch (and re-watch) a couple of our good games from the latest season to realise it is never that bad. I think the old game I have, bar 2005 dvd pack, is the 2008 final win over the Roos. Probably the last great game from Monty Buchanan. He was every where (apart from the scoreboard) that day.

It's amazing the progress in the game. If you got the premiers from 1999 (North) to play the 2015 Wooden spooners (Lions), the Lions would win by 5-10 goals.

Carey and Longmire would be standing in the 50m arc by themselves while their opponents were positioned past the half way part of the ground forming a wall. The Kangaroo midfielders would be stifled by the crowding tactics of the Lions. Even Stef Martin would be running Mckernan off his feet with his mobility.

It would be interesting to see what the game is like in 15 years time from now.

While I think there is a lot of truth in this assessment, I also think it is fair to say that if the young, agile Lions were getting on top, there would be a few coat-hangers, elbows and other dirty tactics behind the play from the Roos to bring the whipper-snappers to heel. Not to mention the maggots coming into play to ensure the power base retained it's pro-Victorian imbalance.

It all depends on whether you play with current rules or 16 year old rules. The Superfooty Podcast were speculating about whether the current Dawks are better than the Eighties Poos and Wees and concluded the current team would easily win, but I reckon that is only if they played with 2015 rules not 1987 rules. How would current forwards go with their arms being chopped and "in the back" not being called?

There are people all over the place that do this quite cheaply.
I'm more than willing to pay them too... they have the patience I don't possess.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

At the time I had a specific vhs to dvd recorder. It has died out as the use of vhs has died out. Did about four years worth and then blesses to everyone, Foxtel played each game from 2000 in an offseason around about 2003/4 That was a blessing. And yes, I have most of the Swans winning games from 1997...... sad isn't it.
