League freak who will be a swan

Not a subscriber to Murdoch papers so can't read article but apparently some 14 year old rugby league gun will follow the Jack brothers to the Swans

Sign him up. $30 million - 15 years. The kid's a freak. We better start saving our value points 'cause he's going to cost 2400 of them.

He's got a brutal ankle breaking step on both sides could have been a star in the NRL, would love him to be a swan but would've equally love to see him playing for NSW in Origin

Gotta say, as a Victorian living in SA, I don't understand - or even care for - rugby. But that kid is amazing!! I could watch those highlights all day!

If you can't get past the subscriber page, just go to google with a few key words you know are in the heasdline and it will march you satraight past the pay wall. In this case google Tyrell Mayfield and select the Daily Telegraph article.

This is a name to watch going forward, I bet Eddie is watching it!

Love the step on this young man. If he sticks with the academy he'll be exciting to watch in Swans' colours. Inside / outside midfielder?? Will know how to tackle.

Reminds me of Cyril, but could end up bigger and faster. As incisive as a scalpel.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Now just waiting for the hysteria to erupt.

This, of course, should be a good news story about how the academy system is converting elite athletes in NSW which is critical for the game given that NSW and QLD have over 50% of the Australian population but about 1% of AFL Draftees. Of course, peanuts like Eddie will focus their attention on the silly idea we are getting an unfair advantage out of this.

As for his future prospects I'd simply say relax and don't get to excited. He is still young and there's a very very good chance that despite th academy that he will be signed up by rugby league on a big fat contract as a 15 year old. The AFL, and many on here even (i.e. inter-staters) , do not properly appreciate how strong the NRL is in Sydney and Brisbane

My first love is rugby league so interesting to watch this. My take is that with league the growth/development is through schools and local suburb clubs. This is the same for AFL in Vic/SA/WA. In NSW the best option for kids to progress in AFL is through the academy. I'm speaking to the converted here to say the academy is important to us and AFL in general. Whether Tyrell progresses to become a Swan will be left to the lap of the gods but at least he will know he gave himself a chance to see both sides of the fence. For me I hope he goes with what ever he really wants to do. Forget fame and fortune, that follows if you have the ability and like something enough to give it everything you have.

He may still end up playing league
                          Excerpts:

The 14-year-old was named in the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League team this year but has opted out of league to concentrate on AFL and his studies.

Mayfield has been part of the highly regarded Swans Academy for three years and is looking to follow in the footsteps of young stars Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills.

?I wouldn?t say I?m giving Rugby League away, I?m keeping my options open and concentrating on AFL and we?ll see what the future brings.

?School is number one for my mum and the Swans Academy is going to support me with that.?

South Sydney, St George-Illawarra, Cronulla and the Roosters have all expressed an interest in the lightning quick teenager ? who turns 15 next week ? from Randwick Boys High School.

More than 80 per cent of the 500-plus boys at the academy play another organised sport apart from Aussie rules. Mayfield was identified in the Paul Kelly Cup at primary school level and was introduced to the Academy three years ago.

Academy boss Chris Smith says they encourage boys to play as many sports as possible in their early teens but identifies 15 is a critical point in young athletes sporting and academic development.

?Up until 15 we?re quite flexible and we want them to balance and enjoy as many sports as possible,? Smith said.

Hope he grows a few more inches

It's implied that the Swans are giving him financial support in exchange for focusing his attention on AFL. I think that's the reason for the article. I know he says he's leaving his options open but it seems that he will be spending most of his efforts with the academy. IMO he's got too much athletic ability to waste on rugby. The thing that's great about Aussie Rules is that it's the kind of game where you can express all kinds of athleticism and skill.

Very smart.Swans use their money so the kid can make friends in AFL which will help him stay in the game. This is what Eddie doesn't understand , there is only a certain pool of talent and the trick is to identify this up to 15 no matter what sport they are playing. The Swans make him a AFL player , so should they just get a pat on the back from the game so a VIC club can pick him up as if he was their own ?
