    Positional Changes

Not sure about everybody else's view but would it be worth considering playing Buddy on a wing running forward in 2016 a la Richo in 2009? My thoughts are that it would solve a number of issues, 1. With Sammy, Tip, Rooster, Isaac, etc we have plenty of firepower and this would force us to be less Buddy centric, 2. He is a beautiful field kick and would be able to hit up TIp and Sam in much better fashion that some of the butchering of the footy we saw this year, 3. He is a monster kick of the footy anyway and as good as anyone on the run, 4. Impossible to match up on, maybe Blicavs from the Cats would be the only one capable? 5. He would provide an additional, quality, rotation given the reduction in interchange in 2016. Whilst I absolutely hate the Dawks, when you look at how well Roughead has done on the ball, albeit ruck, Budd is a much better athlete and could cause all manner of problems for the opposition? I just think we need to become more flexible in the coach's box as this bombing it in method had everyone tearing their hair out this year, maybe a change back to the way we moved the ball in 2005/2006 with patience hitting up short to medium targets instead? It is all very well to have potentially one of the most potent forward lines in the game but why don't we try and use it a little more effectively?

I've always thought buddy is more of a wingman, imagine a centreline of rohan, Mitchell, Parker, JPK, Buddy. Flankers would be (HB)McVeigh & Jack, (HF)Heeney & McGlynn

That is pretty much how he played in his last year with the Hawks

Agree with the sentiment, but I think the reduced interchange in 2016 means that Buddy is much more likely to have room in the forward line as players fatigue more quickly and are unable to flood back. This means he will have plenty more one-on-one opportunities than seasons passed, even if he doesn't outmark his opponent in this situation he's borderline unstoppable once the ball is on the ground.

Also, playing on a wing and the extra stress this would put on his body could severely hamper his longevity in the game...given the length of his contract this is definitely something we will need to be mindful of.

Would love to see more of buddy on the wing, especially at the scg. With Jetta gone we need pace and a long kick on the outside. The new interchange cap will require players to be more flexible in order to allow mids to rest up forward. He'll need to be managed for the rest of his career regardless of where he plays. He gets hit pretty hard when the team continually kicks it too him in higjly contested situations.

As others said, he has done it before, most successfully for us in the final v Freo in 2014.

The real point is we need to be flexible enough to have him vary between the forward arc and the wing.

All very good points Conor. We do need to be mindful of his longitivity.

I think when Tippett is playing at full forward that Bud will be given more of a license to roam higher up the ground...with his confidence up there isn't a defender in the league that will beat him one on one in the goal square.

I don't think we need to give him a position. Just et him loose. Let him roam ala Ryano in his first years with us. I k he has the tank and abiltiy to push forward at just the right moment to make an impact. the other thing is who is going to go with him.

Other positional changes are Reid playing the true CHF possie. I ove him there and his game suits. tip could find himself as a permemant FF some games next year as we develop Naismith.

Heeney is clever and a very good mark. We need to start utilising him a bit more. As some of the oder payers reach their nadir he will be important. Talia might just get plenty of games next year as Ted declines. Teddy was looking very shaky for most of last year and the writing is on the wall. If it wasn't we woud not have bothered with Talia and just deveoped juniors.

The interchange is only reduced by rotations but we have an extra player to use as the sub rule is now, at last, defunct. This will make a world of difference but I don't think 30 rotations are going to make much difference to the forwards, more the mids. Mids will have to stay out longer or rest in the forward line more. But key forwards and wingers probably won't be affected as much except for less rest. Maybe 2 to 3 less bench rests. That will induce clubs to rotate the wingers, have 3-4 players who play there but all on the field at once.

The problem with the idea of resting in the forward line is that there is no such thing as a rest anymore. If a player goes to the forward line now they can't just hide in the forward pocket to catch their breath. They have to be a part of all the forward plays as well as defend as hard as anything. The only rest they will get is if the ball doesn't go down there.

It will be interesting to see the different ways each club goes about dealing with tired players.

Ideally our forward line is the last place a player goes to for a rest next season...
