I would suggest they are working very hard on the skills. Appears they are taking a different approach to fitness re running. If those power forwards have lost weight in line with the new interchange rules, it appears we are taking a different approach to build stamina with the necessity for players to stay on the ground longer.
The pre season begins !!!!

I recall reading that this preseason the skills work is interspersed with the running; the aim apparently being to build skills under pressure/fatigue.Comment

Thanks Graeme. I will see you down at training in the New Year no doubt. I will be going down in the second week they come back as most players will be back on the park by then. No use if too many players recovering from ops and injury. For a start Bud, Talia, Kizza, Lukie, Gaz etc should all be back in full training by then. If not then week three.
I am glad we have really concentrated on the skills program as I think that was an area in the last couple of years that has suffered.Comment

Cameron Mooney on SEN yesterday explained how pre season works these days.
In days not too long ago clubs had the theory that you get your fitness base and don't touch the footy until new year. This explains why teams were rusty for a few games. Nowadays you do a pre season before you do the full pre season. That is; players during their break are expected to keep up a reasonable level of fitness so when they come back can get straight into full fitness work.
He said the footies come out and they are quickly into team work, strategies, ruck work and even match simulation. So leading up to Xmas it is full on
and pre season is in full swing. The reason they come back so early(Jan 3) is because that is the player agreements these days and clubs now seriously build to round 1. He said it is now so micro professional that any let up means the competitive edge is lost. He said an example is; a player misses a couple of sessions, maybe even one, and all of a sudden they are struggling to keep up with their mates. It is that much of a fine line.
He finished by saying they no longer need a pre season comp to get their touch. hence the CUP concept has disappeared. He reckons you only need 2 preseason games to get your rhythm.Comment

Are the boys back tomorrow or is it the last day of their hols? Seems really strange to come back on a Sunday. I want to go to see the boys train but might have to wait until I come back from Adelaide after 12th.Comment

Don't know if anyone has seen this but here is a link to a great story about the West Pennant Hills footy club featuring McVeigh and Jack. Bring on the footy season! Where It All Began: McVeigh and Jack - AFL.com.auComment

Yes that is an article from preseason last year. Interesting really the AFL is rehashing stuff. They must have run out of news in the off season. Might be nice for them to concentrate on giving us training updates for all sides, injury updates, stories about rags to riches, some background and much more footage on the new recruits from each side, Eddie McGuire spontaneously com-busts (hopeful)Comment

There are a couple of great videos today on the Swans' site of the players training in the constant downpour we have been experiencing in Sydney for the last three days. (I expect the videos will soon come though on the RWO RSS feed.) What I really like is Heeney saying the coaches/players are using the opportunity to focus on their wet weather skills. This is an area in which we have been very poor in recent years.Comment
