Just on the point of hiring ex players to commentating has anyone else noticed that they complain more about umpiring decisions when the umpire hasn't played at afl level and also seem to only want ex players in media positions

Just need to think outside the box a bit and take some risks.
I just had a flash of what it would be like with Freddy in the commentary box.....

To be fair, despite probably never watching a game in his life, Freddy would probably still know more about football than BT.

The commentators that I respect and seek out are:

Dennis Commetti, he is articulate, accurate, intellegent and witty
Anthony Hudson, despite his being a Geelong supporter he is extremely unbiased, I still remember his call of 2005 SF.
Gerard Wheatley, he has opinions, likes to make predictions and can call with passion but without hyperbole.
Tim Lane, great caller over many years, still favours Carlton in the clinches but is very cool and measured.
            Drew Morphett, see above.

            For Colour and comments:
Barry Hall, always good around the ground and is capable of out of the box thinking.
Mark MacClure, calls as he sees it and does not try to be popular.
Tagdh Kennelly, when you can understand him he actually very clued in to the strategy as well as the trend of the game.
Brown, has comments that are interesting if not always relevant but trying hard and deserves respect for his contribution to the game

            Hate:
MacGuire, cannot call, does not know the players names well enough if at all, fumbles under pressure and is puerile when making observations.
Brereton, arrogant and narcissistic, facile and trivial, without any grace and dismissive in the extreme.
Taylor, a clown with few redeeming characteristics and no wit.

            Making up the numbers:
            Healy, too many hobby horses
Dunstall, like a lot of what he does but too Melbournecentric.
Johnston, talks too quickly and seems to be reading off a sheet the whole time as if everything he says is scripted.

I'd agree with most of that.
              Can't stand Commetti though.
He annoys the hell out of me. I know I'm in the minority...

Nar I'm with you there. He used to have a bit of something, but hasn't for quite a few years now. He probably knows it too, he's retiring after this season.

Anthony Hudson is the only commentator I approve of.

The supposed elite of commentating Commetti and McAvaney annoy me the most.

McAvaney too pro Adelaide, too anti Swans, too many man-crushes

Malcolm Blight. Always asked a question at the end of a (usually pointless or obvious) statement, as if he was interested in the other commentators view, but was dismissive if they differed from his self-professed opinion. He wasn't the messiah, just a very naughty boy.

                    Tim Watson was generally insightful.

Luffy, Brad Seymour & David Murphy on radio always add some balance to Swans games
                    Jude Bolton is pretty articulate

He is living proof that just because you were good at playing football does not mean you are either any good at analysing it or intelligent enough to wipe your own botty. The fact that he gets a job in the football media can only be explained by his relationship with a certain media identity. One is the dung beetle and one is the dung. Neither is worth a pinch.

By the way, if you think the powers that be against us now, forget Brererton. Wait until Chin-man's little Pinnochio takes his place on the Commish. That is the single greatest worry in the next five years for the Swannies.

Exactly what I thought when Andrew Newbold was appointed to the Commission. We will have to watch our backs.

Exactly. With Chris Langford leaving they needed a new Hawthorn mole to keep things balanced. Now that the COLA is gone and with it the trade restrictions, they need a new Hawthorn presence with updated ideas on how to tie Sydney's hands behind its back (while the Hawks continue to rape and pillage the bottom clubs at the same time as claiming they develop their own and claiming equalisation is unnecessary.)

Yes, MP, surely it can't be too long, until Bruce finally gives in to temptation and asks the question, "Cyril, do you like movies about gladiators?"
