No it doesn't affect the players salaries. But if they are elevated rookies their salary has to be included in total player Payments and I suspect that would put us over the salary cap if we elevate rookies under the nominated rookies rule ( in other words taking positions 39 and 40 on a senior list). That's my point.

The advantage of using the LTI list is that you replace the salary of the injured player so it's instead of their salary for salary cap calculations not in addition to.

I have to say I find the rules confusing but I am trying to understand them

I agree the rookie rules and payments are complicated. I think what you are looking for is set out on Page 69 of the current collective agreement with the players? association, as I've copied below.

Bottom line is that, while the rookie will get paid at least the same (think would always be more) than his usual salary when he is elevated to replace a senior player on the LTI list, there is no additional cost to the salary cap. However the full salary of a promoted rookie (when promoted during the year as an increase to the senior list number) IS counted under the cap.

That?s the reason I think the Swans will elevate to cover the LTI (at least for Johnson) but not promote to increase senior list to more than 38.

      ?Football payments to a Rookie:
      (i) while on the Rookie List; and/or
(ii) while on the Primary List to replace a long term injured Player,

shall not be included in the Total Player Payments of an AFL Club provided that if
the Rookie remains on the Primary List when the long term injured Player is
reinstated to the Primary List, Football Payments received by the Rookie in respect
of the period after the long term injured Player is reinstated (?the date of
reinstatement?) will be included in the Total Player Payments. Those amounts shall
include a monthly pro-rata amount of the base payment calculated from the date of
reinstatement and also include all Senior Match payments for Matches played on or after that date.?

So I don't think what aguy has said is quite accurate. You don't replace the salary of the injured player (it continues to be counted under the salary cap) but the elevated rookie player's salary is not counted under the cap for the period in which he is replacing a player on the LTI list.

Meg I believe what you say is correct, so we can elevate and play rookies without affecting our Salary Cap because they are replacing players listed as LTI.

Therefore we can elevate up to two whilst AJ (full season) and Rohan (a long time) are not PLAYING. Once either returns to playing Seniors or NEAFL, an elevated rookie must be dropped off the senior list. After a ruling last year by the VFL, elevated rookies are not tied to a particular LTI player for the purposes of being de-elevated once one of the LTI players returns to playing.

As is usual in these cases, no one will be elevated unless they are going to be selected for a senior game, usually happens around the Wednesday of the week they will play. So look forward to the announcement next Wednesday 23rd March when Tom Papley gets elevated :-) It will be a great story given both grandfathers played for South Melbourne. I like what I,ve seen of Tom - and he's short enough to cop head high tackles in front of goals, although not as many as shoulder shrugger/s Selwood/s!
