    McVeigh on On the Couch

On Monday night Macca said that due to the trade bans placed on us by the AFL certain players who wanted to come to the club via a trade couldn't - anyone have an idea on who these certain players were?

Did Patfull make it clear he wanted to play at the Swans specifically, or just that he wanted to be in Sydney?

I seem to remember that negotiations were well underway when the ban was announced.

Patfull is the obvious one that we know of but it was interesting to hear him say 'players who wanted to come to the club'. I wonder how many others there were and who they were.

Do all the player managers keep Maguire informed of possible player movements or something??? Having got wind of a looming Swans 'juggernaut' he swung into 'equalisation' mode...... The Hawks will send him Xmas cards forever!

I think Liz was intimating that it could have been anyone.

Patfull is an absolute gun. How disappointing.

Patfull is the only one that it seems that we missed out on due to the trade ban. I think he's an excellent defender, but on balance I don't think it turned out to be much of a loss.

He would have ended up replacing Laidler as the 3rd key defender and sometimes loose man in defence. Although I would rate him higher than Laidler, it's not by that much of a margin and Laidler has been improving since he's come to the Swans. Given that Laidler is 5 years younger than Patfull, a better kick than Patfull and on a lower salary, I think we probably didn't get hurt much by not getting Patfull. We lost a little bit of depth and that's about it.

The loss of COLA was the real significant one, but the trade ban, as unjust and absurd at it was, won't turn out to have any deleterious effect on the club in practical terms.

That's a great point you make about the age difference, though I still think Patfull is a jet and could have helped us have a real crack at it this year and next (with our injuries last year we were never going to have a good go at it). He'll probably retire after 2017.

That being said I do really like Laidler - with that great booming left boot of his - hopefully he can keep improving as he has been since he arrived.

I also find it funny that the only couple of seasons when we were not allowed attract star players from other clubs were the two seasons we had exclusive rights to Heeney and Mills - probably the two most promising youngsters the Swans have ever drafted. Despite the trade ban we still definitely ended up winners on both off seasons IMO! Take that Eddie!

There was a rumour that we were chasing Tyrone Vickory from Richmond in the 2014 trade period.

I must say I like the idea of Eddie and the Pies chewing on their own inadequacies for the rest of eternity rather appealing.
We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!

If that's the case, I think the trade ban might have been a blessing!

We've made lots of great trades, and some really bad trades, over the years....Vickory would of fallen into the later category....

If this inconceivable rumour was true.....Thanks Gil.
