Thanks aardvark, I'm interested. I'm quite envious actually, I would have loved the opportunity to play footy when I was a teenager.
Can you tell me if there any rule modifications for the women? For example, how long are the quarters?Comment

Really interesting reading the backgrounds of the women who will line up for the Swans - top athletes from running, basketball, netball, cricket, baseball, golf(!), not to mention a woman who plays for the New York Magpies. Seems to indicate that once girls have a pathway open to them for AFL through the academy system, we are likely to see promising female athletes take up footy at a young age.Comment

Too right. Always a bit of a gripe for me that the Academy didn't accept girls (given how few of them were expected to play AFL and how a stated objective was to increase the exposure of the game). I have two very talented daughters that compete at the highest level in soccer and athletics, and I can absolutely see them having a crack at this at some point (if only to fulfill their father's dream to have offspring in R&W!!).Really interesting reading the backgrounds of the women who will line up for the Swans - top athletes from running, basketball, netball, cricket, baseball, golf(!), not to mention a woman who plays for the New York Magpies. I read that article and I take back some of my comments. I still think we should be playing more ressies games before the seniors at the SCG but we need to embrace the fastest growing segment of the game.
Also happy to read that two of Horse's colts are in the academy system, how good would it be if they were guns and we got them instead of North.Comment

Yes I watched it. Moments of pretty good. But its for four quarters isn't it. They were willing and into it, but too much of it inept and not worthy of a curtain raiser. Perhaps one in 15 of the players could mark/catch the ball. Few could kick it, and as for handballing.....
Long long way to go ladies. Can see it being a good tournament in the future, one day, down the track, with a hell of a lot more training.
Good to see cropped hair, long blond ponytails and head scarfs in the mix tho.
Harsh observation is that they played like girls (as the ground announcer insisted on calling them) and not like women. Too harsh? Don't think so. I had to sit through it.
The GWS and Swans ressies were dudded in my opinion. Again. They should have been on show.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment
