Hiscox is an elite middle distance runner who broke the beep test in his draft year. His strength, not surprisingly, is his ability to cover the field and run the whole game out. He plays predominantly as a winger or across half forward and this year has added the ability to kick bags of goals (bags of 3, 4 and 5 goals already this year) with his superior running ability creating separation between himself and his direct opponent and subsequently resulting in close to goal scoring opportunities.

Hiscox is not a noted ball winner (only 1 game over 20 disposals last year, but already 2 out of 6 this year) and has a very uncontested game style. Don't expect him to win many hard balls due to his slender frame but can prove deadly if he get into open space. A big knock on him though is his poor kicking, especially on the run.

Yes, suddenly it gets a whole lot harder. Hopefully Teddy is ready to go. Our defence I feel is being protected to some extent by the strength of our mids, Kennedy being one of the stronger contributors. I sense the ball could be spending a bit more time in our D50 and a little less time in our F50 as a result.

Not that concerned about losing the previous two to Richmond - we lost the game at the SCG last year by playing dumb unaccountable football after half time, and in the final game of 2014 at Homebush we rested players for the finals including Bud and they fell over the line by 3 points. More concerned about losing JPK, Benny and Robbo while Rance and Grimes return. Also our first game at the MCG this year where our fortunes have been mixed.

I'm also wondering if there is a fine for this ?

I was vocal about Collingwood Jessie white in to replace Goldsack a few weeks ago when Jesse wasn't on the list of emergencies. That definitely is a fine as I'm sure it was after the first game of the weekend.

I will be interested to find out if this is a fineable situation.

To my merry band of McHack doubters.... Richmond are paying $3.80.

There is some regeneration going on at the Swans.

Five debutants this year already Mills, Papley, Hewitt, Aliir and now Hiscox.

Mills, Papley and Hewitt are pretty much regulars now.

A 5th debutant as early as round 8! Is that any kind of a record for us? In any event, it's exciting! I confess Hiscox' selection has taken me by surprise but I am delighted they have the confidence in him. I won't have high expectations of him but I will watch with interest and be interested if Horse and the other coaches say anything other than banal platitudes about his performance after the game.

I wonder if it'll get the pundits talking. Has any other team blooded as many players this year? I know the Suns have had a lot of injuries.

I'm also suspicious about whether we are just managing Joey a little ahead of the Hawks and if he would be playing if they were our opposition this week.

The swapping of emergencies is kind of bizarre. Do they all travel to Melbourne for the game? Could they be wanting someone to get a game this week for them to be better prepared for a call up next week if Joey is still out? Usually they stick with substitutes until the player they are replacing returns, but Aliir was a recent exception to that rule (if it be a rule at all).

                    All very intriguing....

Very curious changes to the emergencies...

Why would... Kennedy out, Hiscox in, mean ...BJ out, Rose in and Tyrone out, XRichards in ?

Doesn't seem necessary from a balance point of view.

Does anyone know when Kennedy last missed a game? I've a feeling it was the last 2 rounds of 2014, but not certain of that.

How much of Kennedy not playing is about getting him right for next weekend v the Hawks? I'm guessing that they've picked a team to beat Richmond without him. And how much of the other selections are about the future rather than this game?

I seem to remember Riewoldt kicking 2 or 3 on Teddy so quickly last year that they had to move him off and put Rampe on him.

Richards is an honest battler who rarely gets beaten in the NEAFL, can play on talls and smalls, but the question will always remain whether he is capable of bridging that huge gap between NEAFL forwards and AFL level forwards.

The thing is if either Xavier or Aliir (or both!) make it as regular senior players it will be the first time since our move to AFL Canberra and subsequently the NEAFL that we have developed a key defender in our reserve grade side by playing him as a defender. Our tall(-ish) defenders of the past decade:
                              • Leo Barry - failed forward turned into a key backman.
                              • Craig Bolton - recruited from Brisbane.
                              • Heath Grundy - regularly played as a forward at reserves level, and kicked bags of goals for fun.
                              • Alex Johnson - has never played an official NEAFL game. 3 practice games in 2011 before his memorable debut and consecutive run to the 2012 flag and then sadly it was another NEAFL practice game last year when he did his knee again.
                              • Jeremy Laidler - recruited from Carlton.
                              • Dane Rampe - 2 NEAFL games.
                              • Ted Richards - recruited from Essendon, and while he did have stints in reserve grade they were never for an extended period.
                              • Lewis Roberts-Thomson - reserve grade football in the VFL.

                              and then the failures:

                              • Alex Brown - no senior games
                              • Matthew Dick - no senior games and reinvented as a winger by Carlton
                              • Campbell Heath - injuries cruelly cut short his career.
                              • Jordan Lockyer - no senior games in 2 years.
                              • Jack Lynch - cut after one season.
                              • Brendan Murphy - a lot of hype, but no senior games.
                              • Max Otten - no senior games
                              • Matt Spangher - often injured or out of favour.
                              • Tommy Walsh - a couple of senior games.
Thanks, ugg- excellent point about our development of key defenders in the reserves, too! I'd love to see X given some kind of chance in the seniors, although I have to say just on the little bit of Aliir we saw against Brisbane he's ahead in my brain purely based on "seems like he can be composed at AFL straight away, would love to see him without first game nerves".
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Not like for like at all which means that there will have to be restructuring.

Teddy back into defence probably means McVeigh back in the midfield to place Kennedy. Hiscox and Towers to replace half-forward/wingers McGlynn and Robinson with either Heeney or Hewett getting some time of the inside midfield time McGlynn was getting.
Ludwig has mentioned this is in other threads but with Teddy slotting back into defence, I thought Jones would spend more time in the midfield. Now with Kennedy out, to me it is a given. He loves contested footy and will be hitting them hard. Tigers don't have particularly tall midfielders so I think it is a perfect opportunity to give him a run in the guts. He will be a great match up for Miles.
