He's an ideal third tall but I am pretty sure we'll be looking for a long term KPD replacement. We can afford to trade our first rounder and throw in a sweetener like a Towers. It may not be MacDonald but I'm pretty sure we'll be bringing a KPD in. Hurley would cost too much and the only way that could happen is if Tom goes south but I think we all hope that doesn't happen and the noises are that he should re-sign soon.
In terms of salary cap I don't think it would be an issue, the salary that Ted's retirement will free up plus whatever Towers is on would be enough I think.Last edited by Mug Punter; 11 June 2016, 10:33 PM.Comment

And Alex Johnson, once his knee is fixed.
I think McDonald is a good defender, but his disposal is not that great. I don't think we are so desperate that we need to chase players with big offers. I like the way Aliir is developing and feel he is more likely to make it than not. Our first round pick can be used to get a decent KPP prospect in this year's draft that should be ready around the time Reg is ready to retire. Abe Davis may be used in defence, especially if Sam Reid plays forward or Jordan Dawson, who looks a very promising prospect, gets slotted into our forward line.
We had the best defence in the league when our 2 KPDs were both undersized (Barry and Bolton). Smaller, more agile, defenses seem to be doing well in the modern game.
I just want to make the case that our defensive options are many and we don't need to recruit a star KPD to be a very good team next year.
I see AA and Marsh as excellent prospects and with Davis I feel they are still trying to work out where he belongs but I do think he is a keeper. My gut says he is a defensive holding type midfielder and I'll be really keen to watch him closely next week at the SCG in the ressies.
If we were to get a KPD in them we'd have Reg, ANO and Talia as our tall defenders with Smith the small and Rampe, Laidler and Jones as the mids though I can see Zak being rotated through the midfield as his engine gets stronger. Throw in AA and Marsh as genuine cover and we'd look very very strong in terms of backline stocks. At one KPD down we still look OK but we could be vulnerable with injuries and form. Of course the wildcard in all of this is that AJ makes a full recovery and I'm as desperate as anyone that he can make it but if we're being brutally honest that would be a bonus and we have to plan as if he doesn't come back, sad as that is.
It's more a testament to the rest of our list but without paying overs I expect us to go hard at a KPD and given we really are a destination club if choice now I think we'll get a good one.
The testament to the unbelievable growth of our squad depth is the way of ressies are really dominating the NEAFL this year, way way ahead of all the other AFL sides including GWS with their much vaunted depth.

Our drafting and trade strategy has been largely needs based in recent years, such is the strength of our list we only need to tinker, and I think we all agree that our ageing defence is the only thing that needs a bit of work this year. Even though Reg has another couple of good years left in him doesn't mean we won't be pro-active in this area IMOComment

Only difference is that those three were pretty much discards. We've never gone really hard after a key defender.Comment

But we also have a history of trading in decent defenders from other clubs and turning them into much improved players (Ted, Laidler and hopefully Talia).
