I think you all need to get a bit of perspective. Last season the Swans went into the bye looking like contenders, came out of it and were totally smashed by the Hawks / Weagles and you knew they were only making up the numbers. This year we've got a team full of kids, no Tippett, Reid, Heeney and we lost by a kick. On balance I'd say we played 3 of the 4 quarters on our terms and should have won. If we can make top 4 and get our best team out there, I think we are a serious chance, not making up the numbers. Which is pretty amazing considering how many players have played less than 5, 10, 30, 50 games in the side

Sounds weird, but I'm actually glad we lost. It makes it obvious we need to tweak. If we had won, there wouldn't be as many changes at match committee, and further thought about our game style. Winning in a poor performance would be more damaging to us at this stage of the season.

I wonder what the last time was when a team lost a game while winning the contested ball by 37. Clarko is just so smart on how to put together a winning team. Hawthorn are so well organised, don't panic, always seem composed. They are great kicking team, but it also helps when everyone knows where to go in every situation. A smart team is a winning team.

I think Longmire understands what it takes to make a winning side, but it takes time, perhaps a long time, to build a team with good skills and plays intelligent football. We seem to fall over at the final hurdle too often. It's not just losing in the last 2 minutes, but more about messing up great scoring opportunities by a bit of bad play in our forward fifty. We mess us at least 5 easy chances every game; chances that Hawthorn easily convert. We'd be a 5 goal better team than Hawthorn just by correcting 5 poor decisions they would never make. But easier said than done.

In the bigger picture of things, I think we are heading in the right direction. We've got a lot of inexperienced players that are doing pretty well and will only get better. We're building a quicker and better skilled team and still retaining our contested ball winning capabilities.

Rohan is capable of being a superstar. If he can bring that kind of form on a consistent basis, we have another great footballer at our club. He's had a bad run with injuries and I hope it's finally all coming together for him.

I've often commented on Towers' poor decision making. I had given up hope earlier in the year and was happy to see him dropped. He is still a poor decision maker, and very poor under pressure, but is improving. He's starting to convert scoring opportunities more often. He's also playing more constructively in all aspects of the game. He's still only a 25 game player. We have a relatively easy run home. I'd keep him in the side and see if he can continue to make progress. We should be good enough to cover his mistakes in the next month or so. And hopefully more consecutive games will bring him up to a higher level. If he can fix this problem, he could be quite a good player.

Yep, spot on. Terribly disappointing loss but this season has been wonderful for us so far and if the ball had bounced differently on a few occasions in three of our losses we would be two games clear of the pack, but it didn't so we're not and that's footy! Anybody criticising our coaches or players should take a chill pill, sit back and maybe re-read some of the pre-season posts when the majority on here thought we wouldn't even make the eight let alone be genuine contenders. I still think we are a huge chance at the flag this year.

As an aside, the gentleman sitting in front of me last night was a 25 year Hawthorn member, he turned around to me after the Burgoyne goal and said this was the worst umpired game he had ever seen and he felt (and remember this is a long time Hawks member talking) that the umpires were only umpiring one side and the non-frees were killing us - and he had attended the controversial North and Dogs games!

Was that Hanners worst game ? I think his pace gets shown up in these big games. Lloyd was flustered all game and question marks remain. Good game for the coaching staff to know what to fix for the finals.

                What was our tackle count?
                How many missed tackles?
How many "I'll just stand here and look instead of tackling" tackles?

We had 54 tackles, which just pipped our 55 against Richmond as our lowest tackle tally for the year

This will comfort you re: umpires

Penalty against Sydney Swans' Kieren Jack was a mistake, says AFL lawmaker

                      Andrew Wu July 15 2016 - 1:43PM

A member of the AFL's laws of the game committee has conceded umpires made a mistake in handing a costly 50-metre penalty against Sydney captain Kieren Jack on Thursday night...

Under the so-called "east-west" rule introduced at the start of this season, opposition players are not allowed in a corridor five metres either side of the mark as well as a five-metre radius behind the player with the ball. The ruling was arguably the most contentious decision on a night where the performance of the umpires was a major talking point. Michael Christian, who is on the AFL's laws committee, described the call by umpire Shaun Ryan as a "bad error".

Christian, a former Collingwood premiership player, believed Jack was already in the protected zone when O'Rourke marked and had made sufficient effort to leave. "You have to get out of the area immediately but you don't have to run sideways nor on an angle," Christian said on radio station RSN Racing and Sport on Friday morning. "The rule is designed if you're outside the protected zone and you run into the protected zone, 50 straight away. "But when you're already in there you've got to give time to the player to run out. I think it was a mistake by the umpire because he was already in there, he ran out immediately, he didn't sprint but he was going quickly enough to get out of the area, realised he was in there and the whistle blew. Bad error, I reckon."
