Is this cheating? -Developing relationships with umpires off-field

Follow Hawks lead, AFL clubs urged - The West Australian

Seriously, is this cheating? Or should the swans be paying a few thousand extra to build relationships with the umpires as Hawthorn do by flying them up to Sydney?

First the Hawks earn an extra 18 million with their pokies venues and then wine and dine the umps in order to get favourable decisions. They seem to know them all by name and have personal relationships with them.

Why hasn't this received more attention? If the Hawks have a deeper relationship then other teams to the umps, would it be a 'conspiracy' to suggest that umps unconsciously award frees to their mates?

Honestly, doesn't this type of @@@@ call into question the integrity of the game? This crap shouldn't be allowed. Or at the very least it should be required that umpires spend equal time with each club.

Or should we just aim at outspending the hawks on building relationships with umpires? It seems like giving them a free holiday is a bribe?

The development of a "unique relationship" certainly rings true. Very unique indeed.

      Explains quite a bit really
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Surely this is a story? Imagine if we were taking the lead with this what the outcry would be

Transpose it onto another sport. The soccer/cricket/rugby/basketball/netball officials are invited to join the Western Sydney/South Australia/Melbourne/Brisbane/Sydney Swifts for a getting-to-know-you experience ...

I think there would be uproar from those not chosen. So maybe we should all do it - or none of us should.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

That's pretty much it really, hey?

For me, it's blatant cheating. Hawks are finding a loophole by claiming, "oh we're not bribing them, we're just 'being nice' to them. Every club should do it!"

The problem is, around 80% of the umpires are Victorian and none are from NSW. Closest we have is Chamberlain, who is from ACT. Heck, there's even an umpire for QLD for Pete's sake. How are we supposed to shower the umpires with benefits and 'build relationships' with the distance involved??

Smart work by the Hawks - this article is over a year old and no news of any other team doing this?

There should either be rules against this sort of thing, that I'd tend to agree with, or everyone should be doing similar things.

Two separate threads about the umpiring conspiracy? Must be big. What are we going to do about it?

And the whole concept of fining people who criticise the umpiring is wrong. Surely in a culture of excellence they should welcome criticism as an opportunity to improve. The way they shut people up makes it look like they have something to hide.

Suprising that no psychologist has explained that building relationships shows better outcomes for people and organisations.

Hawthorn are buyers and umpires are sellers. The umpires sold 16-6.

I would keep this relationship going.

I dont think its cheating it the manipulation of a humans brain and our unconscious and conscience mind.

In this case friends with benefits and this works against us, bulldogs, saints, adelaide etc..

Friends know who they want to win. Its just a fact that there humans.

It's not cheating if the rules don't forbid it. I'd actually say it's more of a bad look by the umpires than by the club.

Yes, this is something the umpires should address
