Joel, that second comment was made in jest. I knew what you were getting at - I assumed that the would have given it away.

    I like Neil Cordy's take:

"Unfortunately for the Swans the unbalanced free kick count was entirely predictable, as it was in last year?s grand final and as it has been for virtually all non-Victorian teams when they meet the Bulldogs in Melbourne.

Last year Luke Beveridge?s team didn?t lose a free-kick count against the five interstate teams that visited Etihad Stadium ? Fremantle, Brisbane, Adelaide, West Coast and Gold Coast. The overall tally was 111-70 in their favour.

It was a different story when they played against fellow Victorian teams with supporters barracking just as loudly if not louder. In those 11 matches the Bulldogs lost the free-kick count 226-197."

    Mmmmmm!
I should be surprised but I'm not at all by these statistics.

The old you won't win a flag playing like that, cortina, workman like, tempo footy. Nevermind our roster has changed completely, the style of play has changed a few times but people (read: media) still refer to us as overly defensive stoppage based team.
Part of it also comes from the AFL's obsessesion with trying to manufacture the rules so to generate a game style of its own preference. Rather than letting the game develop as it will, with various coaches trying different approaches (some more successful than other), the AFL is constantly tinkering rules to encourage faster, less congested football. These changes are going to the essence of the game now, which really worries me - you've only got to look at what is acceptable as a handball these days, and how many players dispose of the ball by simply dropping it and get away with it.

In totem, this has led to a broader context of the game that rewards teams that are better on the defensive side less compared with more offensive teams. I certainly agree to some degree we seem to still be paying penance for the Roos era of football.

Could it be that our midfield is not in the same class as the Hawks midfield from 2012-2016. Look at Tom Mitchell racking up good numbers but not as effective as Sam Mitchell. Sam Mitchell in my opinion was the best player in the AFL from 2013-2015. West Coast could easily win the flag with him this year.

Jordan Lewis was better by foot that Hannas and K.Jack. Kennedy is an inferior player to Luke Hodge.

Brad Hill and Issac Smith torched Rohan, Jetta and Cunningham.

We competed with pressure, high intensity, winning contested ball and keeping the ball in tight.

I don't think our midfield is now in the class of the Bulldogs or GWS. Richmonds midfield could outclass us this year.

Feel free to go elsewhere then (for the third time).

Whilst I don't feel too bad, people have the right to feel aggrieved with the last couple of matches we've had with the Bulldogs.

How about just not commenting about it?

Joel, we are already way out in front of the USA, as well as some footy sites I've seen. Imagine YouTube etc with a swear filter - it would be a huge improvement.

Could be interesting, could be a waste. Longmire has talk to Schwab before and the umpire coaching panel admit the umps made some bad decisions, and what happens next week!! exactly the same bad decisions.

It would be good to get Tippett back for the Eagles game, although if we get the same treatment from the umps that the Saints got (23-8) it won't matter much.

I agree with the Mills decision, although I don't like the giving a free from that situation, but that's the rule, so we have to live with it. We now know that there has to be physical pressure in those situations, but it's still not clear what is meant by physical pressure. Does there have to be physical contact and if not, how close does the opposition player have to be for it to be considered physical pressure? Suppose in Mills situation that Mills is standing still with Picken moving toward him so that the distance between the players is the same, can Mills knock the ball for a behind?
