Since 1946 I have been optimistic with the Old Bloods now The Swans.I can remember there were some really bad seasons, BUT there were a hard core of supporters that NEVER gave up . We went to every game.At the end of the seasons we all Said "We will be better next year". It took 49 years for our flag, it was worth the wait. I am only sorry most of the old bloods have passed on . WE WILL BE BETTER NEXT SEASON.

I'm optimistic we can't play much worse over the remainder of the season as we have in the opening 6 rounds :P

The season looks cooked, but if the fairypuppies can win a Premiership with the help they needed in 2016, then miracles do happen, so there is no reason why we couldn't pull one out of the hat. I can't se it myself, but lets just start with a win on Sunday and go from there please!

Seems Sydney and Hawthorn are level on 11 wooden spoons each. I'm optimistic we can beat them twice and have them take the lead in the Spoon race.

I think this is a wonderful opportunity. Our game plan is high intensity, and it requires the players to be "up" week in week out, and they have been so for 5 years. Three grand finals means three months extra work without any mental respite. I think they are mentally jaded - the fact that Heeney says it is quiet on the field suggests this. I recall a Geelong player saying that the Hawks too were very quiet on field.
Every other side has worked us out and knows how to counter our game plan. For 5 years we have quite rightly proceeded on the basis that the game plan is successful and simply needs a few tweaks to make it better. But the game has moved on now and I don't think a few tweaks is enough.
What we now need is a new game plan, which will excite the players. We certainly have the talent to play to any new plan, and we have all year to develop it and train the players for it.

I think this year is going to be a struggle but we must keep the faith.
We keep hearing how we can't afford to bottom out, if our supporters are that fickle that they will drop of cause we are not winning games those supporters are a disgrace and we may well be better off without them.
I remember in 2005 after the semi final against Geelong a former Geelong player said that they were one bad year off becoming a really good side, meaning if they were able to get a couple of early picks in the draft and keep their core group they would be better off in the long run..
2006 they missed the finals got their picks they were after came back in 2007 and won the flag, maybe this is what we need an early pick to freshen the list up.
I still want us to win every game and would never support the idea of tanking and nor would I support the team if they went out to play without trying.
What would happen if we didn't win a game would the AFL give us a concession pick?

They'd investigate us for tanking & fine us by restricting trade for 3 years.

If we continue to play the way we did on Saturday, we would genuinely deserve one.

I was optimistic this time last week, but now can't possibly see how we could turn things around dramatically. In fact, now my greatest concern is that we will improve moderately - which means missing out on the best of the draft picks, and probably enough for Longmire to convince himself his plan is still worth persevering with long-term.

Whatever the future holds, it will still have to be seen as a waste that we haven't won a premiership whilst we've had use of the most talented and dynamic forward of all time, in his prime. That's the big issue with having the developing talent rising in the next few years - it will coincide with Franklin going in decline. To not even do enough this year to scrape into the finals and give ourselves the outside chance of Franklin having an amazing finals series and at least being there to do a Bradbury if an Adelaide or GWS fall over, is very disappointing with the talent we have.

Rest assured there are thousands of new (20 years+) hard core supporters that will stick with them through thick and thin! If we did it in 1993 we can do It again - god help us ![emoji7]

Some really nice sentiments expressed on this thread. We don't stop supporting our club just because they're having a crap year. To me, it's inconceivable to drop the Swans and support another team.
The 2 dominant teams in the AFL over the last 5 years are Swans and Hawks and look where both teams are now. This is the inevitable result of the AFLs attempts at equalization. Both teams have played more games than any other in the last 5 years, have had very few high draft picks. We had the trade ban when we recruited Buddy and now Hawthorn have given away their top draft pick to St Kilda. We've had significant retirements and now we have injury problems to key players.
I don't think we'll make finals this year. If we continue playing the way we have so far we're not going to win too many games.
Has any other team in the AFL made finals in 13 of the last 14 years?

Well here we are, wallowing in the depths of the basement of ineptitude on the AFL ladder. Am I confident that we can get out of this, well I don't really know but what I can do is look around me and see what this landscape is like. The last time I was here Paul Keating was PM and the median house price in Sydney was just a tick over $180k. As I survey this unfamiliar land, the following are a few examples of what I found.

A Carlton football club guide to salary cap management.
A Terry Wallace recruitment guide, handwritten notes saying Tambling > Franklin, Fiora > Pavlich.
Seven copies of a Richmond FC 5 year plan. On closer inspection it is 7 different plans with just the dates changed beginning in 1983.
A Danny Frawley game plan. It even contains a chapter on how to tackle a witches hat.
                        A Collingwood self-destruct plan dated 2011.
A Brisbane Lions strategic plan titled, ?Our journey to Fitzroy? dated 2004.
A relative recent looking document titled ?Whatever it takes? Lots of references to ?commercial in confidence?, ?top secret? and ?not to be disclosed to the external parties?.
There?s even a place down here where goal umpires taunt St Kilda, Port, GWS, Gold Coast and Freo supporters by waving two flags. Funny stuff. They said they used to perform in front of bigger crowds until the field umpires started playing favourites late last year. Their crowds have dropped off a bit but they believe the field umpires have a new fan base.
Even found Ian Ridley in a dark corner mumbling to himself as he read a Hawthorn merger blueprint.
Didn?t find anything about the Kangaroos. They appear to be irrelevant everywhere.
There's even a manual on how to tank after winning a premiership, dated 2006.

It?s fair to say it looks like there are a number of teams who have made regular visits to these depths over the last 25 years, and some have been here for the entire 25 years.
Am I confident that our residency down here is short term? Yes. We aren't the basket cases like some who have been before us.

I think it is a little difficult to be positive when we really don't know what the problem is. There are many theories and it is possibly a little bit of all of them. I am still not sure where we are at. As of last week many of us still thought we could get on a winning track and make a go of the remainder of the season. So until I really get something clear to say where the Swans are at then I just don't know what to feel.

There was a season when we were 2-4 after six rounds after losing to West Coast by 45 points and people here were making "optimistic" predictions about making the finals.

                                That year was 2005.
