They slowed right down on the' shut down' talk after Roos left. (Except a few lazy commentators)

The footy commentary on the Swans has generally been far more positive during the Horse era.( Things like 'slingshot footy, great spread, fierce pressure' etc).

But I've noticed a lot more of the 'shut down' talk creeping back in lately.

Has that just been largely this week? I mean, for the conspiracy theory about us watering the SCG to work, the wet ground had to advantage our style of play, therefore we are obsessed with playing lock down football. Like most conspiracy theories, most of the facts and the conclusion are wrong.

The other thing that bugs me is the continual talk of the scg being such a small ground. Yes is it is a bit smaller than the mcg but the playing field is only about 5 or 6 metres shorter and it would be the closest in shape to the mcg of all the grounds. The others are longer and skinnier.

But the Melbourne media persists with the same myths about all things Swans related

I didn't watch the Channel 7 pre-game. Did they actually use the footage of BT measuring the distance from the goal line to the 50m arc (which was shown on Talking Footy)? The result according to BTs wheel was 700mm short, but I don't think it was the 'smoking gun' that he thought he was going to find.

Melbourne is the highest disposal team in the competition

It will be fascinating in particular to observe how we approach the first qtr against a team that loves to starve the opposition of time with the ball

I don't think the approach changes much.

It's whether or not we can deliver fierce pressure and tackling, causing turnovers, throughout the game.... That's certainly what Horse preaches.

It's one of those things that people like to talk about, assuming it affects results but never actually bothering to see whether there's any data to support the assertion. Much like the free kick count

As an aside: it's quite hard to find accurate oval sizes. I guess they change sometimes, and some sites give stadium dimensions but not AFL ovals. The best I've found so far as this graphic and this page from 2014. So yes, the SCG is closest to the MCG in shape and around 5m shorter on both axes. I suppose the metres add up when you run for 2 hours but as to how that alters games...well, I don't have the data

I think the 2014 info. on SCG is out-of-date. From the current SCG website:

Ernie in the games against the Dogs and against the Bombers we used a lot of uncontested football first qtr and second to control the games and did so

Against Richmond we went head to head fierce contested footy first 2 qtrs and were destroyed

For me it is our flexibility of turning on contested or turning it off for periods of the game to arrest the opposition momentum

We have done this with control 2 of the last 3 games

I feel we have seen a turning point for the swans re our flexibility of styles

I also love how our backline functions when we play a little more uncontested when required

Mills looks very good then almost like a young hodge being a little more of a play maker because he had time and space with the adjustment to a slower tempo

                        My guess
                        IN: Jones, McVeigh, Aliir
                        Out:Towers, Hayward, Melican

If Melican is out I would be surprised if Aliir came in, Melican should hold his spot unless he's out because of match ups. That being said I saw Aliir rucking against Naismith in a photo on the website, wouldn't mind seeing Aliir in for Sinclair

Be still Ludwig's beating heart! Your two greatest dreams could come to fruition in one swoop if Aliir replaces Sinclair. Maybe Horse is softening to your message. Helps that Naismith has played a few weeks running now. It might be doable. It's certainly a better idea than picking Towers as our second ruck.

Speaking of rucks, for the record I like Naismith's hair cut. Way better than some others we've seen on footballers from various codes:
