I watched on TV and haven't commented until now. I thought it was a really gutsy win and fully deserved. We got away to a good start and the Crows had to play catch up. The umpiring was completely one-sided. It wasn't until the end when the ch7 commentators mentioned the free kick count. It seemed to me that in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter that every time we kicked the ball out of our defence to a contest there was a free kick paid to the Crows. I recall thinking the umpires really want the Crows to win this. If the Crows had kicked even marginally better they would have won convincingly. I thought it was karma though because, the more free kicks they awarded to the Crows the worse they kicked.
It was no surprise our guys got fumbly - i think they would have been nervous to go near the ball lest they get a free awarded against them. To the credit of our guys, they withstood the pressure generated by the lopsided free kick count and finished the better of the 2 teams. If the Crows had the better of the game it was due to the umpires more than anything else.
Wayne Carey mentioned the lopsided free kick count. It was mcAvaney who said he didn't notice the umpires until late in the game - the Mills/Betts free kick. Carey also tried to make a point of the set shot numbers. Swans 8-2 from 10 and the Crows 3-7 from 10. McAvaney tried to hose this down.
Overall, I thought Tippet rucked really well and by the end of the game he was beating Jacobs. Our defence was magnificent but they had to be - they got a lot of practice.
Our better players stood out - Buddy, McVeigh, JPK, Papley. My favorite part was Garys long flat kick from the centre square in the 4th quarter. That was the knife in the heart of the Crows and their supporters.

There was an instant late in the 4th qtr when Hannebery received a handball at half back. He had plenty of space to run it down the wing and kick it inside 50. But he only took a couple of steps and kicked it down the sideline to a 2-1 contest which we lost. I was screaming at the TV to run it.
I wonder if we have cranked up our training load to back right off during break and come in fresh for one last crack. Some sides do that at this time of the year.
Crows laid 37 tackles in the 2nd quarter and the pressure created huge problems. I think lots of the fumbling / poor disposal was a product of the pressure / implied pressure they applied.

No one has to get dropped from the midfield. Newman comes in for Towers, goes into defence for Mills. We have plenty of full time and part time defenders in Reg, Melican, Rampe, McVeigh, Smith, Lloyd, Jones and Newman. Wasn't there an American TV show called 8 is enough? I think Mills gets some pretty tough matchups in defence which doesn't allow him to contribute as much as he is capable of. Longmire is caught in a rut of not wanting to change a winning formula, but sometimes you have to view the evidence, like lopsided inside 50s count against us, and make adjustments before a loss results. Our desperation defence is fantastic, but it would be nice to turn the tables and play more of the game on our terms.

They would have to carry their mobiles so Mills could text them where to stand , then they would have to be good enough to take the defensive mark.

I don't know what people think about the metres gained stat. It's the sort of stat that tends to favour running halfbacks. I think Malceski was tops for a couple of years. Here are leaders in average metres gained for the Swans.

            1. Jake Lloyd
            2. Buddy Franklin
            3. Nic Newman

I think that last one might have surprised a few. BTW, Towers ranks 18th.

Newman at 3rd doesn't overly surprise me. He's a hard working player and he also tends to kick the ball long.

Towers at 18 suggests he's not using his strengths (pace and endurance) to good enough effect, though the role he's being asked to play will also factor into the equation somewhat (including the fact that whatever role that is, it doesn't involve possessing the ball very often).

Towers' role is to promote speculation as to who should replace him.

The day we drop towers, is the day we kiss the premiership goodbye.

I'm actually more surprised by Lloyd than Newman because, for all his good points, disposal efficiency, high possessions and hard running, his kicks typically lack penetration. Still I guess all those other things add up to more than compensate for his short kicking.

I can't help think that Deano was playing a forward defensive role on one of their running half backs. Didn't get near the footy so maybe he wasn't supposed to.

You beat me to the punch. Let's hope Will doesn't read RWO. He's only 18 and in his first year and his performances this year have been exceptional. He doesn't get high possessions but he gives us x-factor galore.

I've come across him twice, one occasion was a 21st or something from memory, the other was just crossing paths on a night out. On both occasions I was in a group of drunk guys in their late teens, early 20s. He came across as a little shy but polite and we all thought he was a nice guy.
