Do we know that Longmire doesn?t already do this?

After our amazing H&A win against Essendon when Rohan took that one-handed mark in the centre square and goaled after the siren, in his media conference Longmire said he didn?t know who from the coaching staff had moved Rohan from defence into the forward line in the closing minutes - then he smiled and said that it was a very good move. I was impressed hearing him say that at the degree of autonomy that must apply in the coaching box.

I don't agree with your assessment of Richmond as being especially versatile. They were the best team in 2017, especially when it counted, and are deserved premiers. But their game was based on lots of mediocre players applying huge amounts of pressure, surrounding one superstar midfielder, a couple of other good to very good midfielders, a decent tall forward and a great defender.

In many ways the style of their triumph was the same as the Bulldogs in 2016. The Tigers' top end talent was better but I think the Bulldogs bottom handful were stronger. I think that the bottom half dozen or so of the Tigers team would struggle to get a game in pretty much any other of the 17 sides.

Just because the Dogs fell back in 2017 doesn't mean that the Tigers are destined to do the same, but it is very hard to maintain that level of pressure and even a small drop off will see their more ordinary players exposed. In the QF against Geelong they really struggled to score until the final quarter, despite controlling the game in the first half. They were somewhat fortunate that the Cats, too, were unable to score when they took control of the midfield in the third quarter.

Lets see how mediocre Richmond are in 2018.

Sorry to see Dew go but he has deserved his shot at a senior role. More Swans intelligence going to the opposition. It will be interesting to see what the Swans do with his Senior Assist Coach role. Will he be replaced at that level or will they just appoint another Assist Coach?

I am trying to find a reason to disagree with you on this, but I can't. What it does say is that Richmond's coaching panel, which was pilloried last year, turned things around in one season to become the most creative in the league. I expected Richmond to lose every time they played in the finals. I constantly undervalued what they could achieve with their group.

Every team tries to apply pressure. It's longtime been central to the Swans' credo. So how can one team, Richmond this year and the Bulldogs last year, raise the pressure bar so high for one season to enable them to win the premiership?

I haven't heard a good answer on this one yet? I don't have one.

I suspect that clubs who have a former head coach on their books as assistant, as long as that person is happy to take the role as assistant and not undermine or snipe, could have a distinct advantage. Ratten at Hawthorn is another recent example that worked very well. While I like that young position coaches we have appointed for next year, I feel that we need a senior voice as well, and hope that we can appoint a strong, experienced senior assistant who will support Longmire by not always agreeing with him, but doing it the right way.

It?s been a major clean out of the assistant coaching ranks. Only one of the 4 remains... and the 1st team players will all have new line coaches next year.

Fresh blood was needed but that much makes me nervous given the limited coaching experience of the replacements.

Think we need to recruit a heavyweight (not physically!), potentially level 4 accredited, and tactically very astute coach (or possibly two) to replace Dew.

It's devastated me that Dewy is going, but you just can't hold a good man down.

I'd like to see Gary Ayres at our club in a Snr Asst Coaching role. By all reports he is a very astute game day coach, has AFL senior coaching experience and what he has been able to achieve at the Borough has been outstanding. To get a stand alone VFL club to two premierships and three minor premierships in that time is impressive.

I suspect he's been out of AFL ranks too long to attract interest but you're right - he's been absolutely magnificent at Port Melbourne. 2 premierships and a runners-up since 2011 with a stand alone club playing against teams filled with AFL listed players and the professional resources they've been able to access. Outstanding indeed! Go Borough!
