As an aside I would have thought the redevelopment of two stadium that are only about 20 years old, maximum, is a bit of a waste of money.
As much as I love sport (although the AFL has been giving me a case of Dehli Belly for the past few years, 2057 being an example), surely this money could better spent elsewhere.

As a commercial deal it's stinks. I bet it wasn't put out to competitive tender at all. The exclusive rights to the biggest event in Australia's sporting calendar would be worth a fortune, and the vic government and MCG have got it for a fraction of its market value.

Having stepped back from the VFL and spent the last 7 months enjoying Australian Rules at a local level it?s amazing how many sheep follow the AFL agenda like lemmings off a cliff. So lets get this straight the contract for the GF Is extended by 20 years with the home ground advantage staying the status quo as well as ticketing with an added bonus of money being spent on local Victorian grounds with also more money spent on a ground in the Melbourne CBD to bring more spectators to Melbourne clubs home ground. So the hope of a neutral GF and fairness has been sold off for, wait for it........a chartered flight n a few training sessions at the ground bwahaha n some are happy with it bwahaha

I've just had a look at the results from 1991 on & to me they are a bit surprising

Where a Vic team has played a non Vic team the results are 8 all!
All other GF's have either been played between 2 Vic clubs or 2 non Vic clubs

Maybe there's an advantage towards the Vic clubs but it may not be as big as we think

The better advantage seems to be to have the better team!

Better to concentrate on this century where the competition has become much more even, especially quite recently. Brisbane were a super team who won 3 in a row,2001,2002 and 2003. Since 2012, every GF has seen a non Vic team play a Victorian club on either its home ground or in the case of the Bulldogs, home city- a distict advantage in its own right. In at least 4 of those cases, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, non Vic club has finished higher than its opponent.All 4 teams lost. Ridiculous situation when any small advantage these days is crucial.

No non-Victorian side has beaten a Victorian side in a grand final without concessions.

Not sure who or what the squiggle is but home ground advantage in a GF is more significant than 8 or so points. Farcical that you can finish lower and play away. Does anyone seriously think that last year's grand final wouldn't have been a very different game if it was played in Adelaide. Same in 2014 against Hawks. Most disgraceful example was 2015 where Eagles beat Hawks in qualifying final in Perth,won their Prelim and then had to play Hawthorn on Hawks home ground. Anty independent observer would see this as absurd and see the competition rightly as a laughing stock. People can try and spin it a much as they like. It is ourageously unfair in the most important game of each season.

The squiggle is a statistical model that makes predictions based on past results. The guy who runs it has developed dozens of algorithms and tested them against historical data to see which works the best, and then uses that to evaluate each team, tip winners each week, predict the ladder and the flag winner.

The grand final is harder to model since there is so little data - only one each year. But his best analysis (now that you mention it) is that the home ground advantage matters *less* in the GF than in a regular season game. Maybe both teams are so keyed up and disrupted anyway that the usual disruption of travelling is less significant.

Also, during the regular season, home game advantage really only gets significant when you are playing an out-of-state team (which is what we are talking about, I guess).

The squiggle is not the only statistical model - there are a few out there, it's a very interesting area. It turns out that people consistently make some errors when tipping eg. they overvalue a close win, and undervalue a team thrashing another team. The also turn up some slightly surprising results, like it matters more that it's a home game than where it's played (or something like that).

In Sydney the government decided that the Olympic Stadium needed to be knocked down less than 18 years after the Olympics and remember that it was reconfigured and refurbished after the Olympics. If it had not been reconfigured it would have held 120,000. OK they backed down on that and are now going for a very expensive refurbishment. The MCG will be decrepit by the standards required for a stadium in 2057 and nobody currently would understand what those standards will be. It is not only arrogant and unfair to the non Victorian clubs to lock in a deal so far ahead but plain stupid to commit future generations to this deal. No players in the 2057 Grand Final have yet been born.

If they insist on playing the GF at the MCG, why not guarantee every team a minimum number of games there and restrict the number of games VIC teams get to play there.

As the news broke this morning that the MCG will host the Grand Final for the next forty years, I was surprised to read that Adelaide will be playing tonight in this Victorian competition.

In fact, a quick glance at the fixture and I discovered that there are numerous teams from outside Victoria in the VFL.

Weird. It?s almost like this is a national competition. Almost. "
