Swans chat Player Injury & Availability Discussion

We don't seem to get much detail from the club regarding injuries and player availability and so I thought there should be a centralised place to discuss these matters amongst ourselves.

I stumbled on this brief article on sen that suggests that Hanners will miss close to a month. I hope they give him an extra week or two as he will only be effective when he is fully fit and has the gut-running capacity.

I'm also worried that Buddy could be out for longer than first hoped. Has anyone heard any further on his bruised heel?

We know Buddy and Dan are out for this week but sounds reasonably positive for next week from Harley video, and also AFL injury update:

?The Swans are hopeful Franklin and Hannebery can push for selection next week, but Melican had a setback late last week with his rehab and will miss another two matches at least. Towers will need to be cleared by an eye specialist but remains a chance to face North Melbourne on Saturday night.?

Also on AFL update and sounding pessimistic are:

    Dawson quad 4 weeks
    Reid quad 7-9 weeks.

I particularly don?t like the Reid listing, the estimated return seems to keep getting pushed further out. Sounds a bit like 2016 ....

Incidentally Ben Reid damaged his Achilles in the last quarter last week, and is listed as an out for Collingwood with return time ?tbc?. Those Reid brothers sure have a rough time with injuries.

Well at least Reid isn't 8-10 weeks like he has been for the past month! But I agree it doesn't seem positive and we really need him at the moment.

So the injury update has been changed after listing Dawson as a "test" yesterday.Knew it was too good to be true.

It seems Towers is likely back this week which is good. One can only assume that Melican did the hammy again and so starts from scratch hence the further 2-3 weeks.

Glad you posted this so we have some reference.
I noticed he Reid was 6-8 weeks last week, and is still the same this week.

Injury information is very fluid from the Swans (and I suspect all other clubs too but I don't monitor). I was pretty disappointed last week when they said Lance was out early in the week and then all of a sudden he was selected on Thursday.

I travel to Sydney at least 3-4 times a year for games and made other plans for the weekend when they said he was out. Callme fickle and, of course, one man does not maketh the team but I am much keener to go if i know the Budster is playing.

Don't know if they were playing Ducks and Drakes with Freo or if they decided they needed him in at 85% fitness to boost the slow ticket sales or even if they were being honest and there was rapid improvement that made him available but I would like to see more transparency from the club on injuries.

What is going on with Sammy (and Lewis for that matter)? Why the secrecy?

                    fickle.

I accept Longmire's reasoning as to why Buddy was a late in.

I suspect the lack of news about Reid is just because there is a lack of news. He's still some way off in a fairly lengthy rehab programme and they are no closer to knowing when he'll be ready to go.

There's no secrecy on Melican. They've already said he might be ready to return this weekend, and if not, almost certainly the week after. They also said that Dawson isn't far behind and will be back playing either next weekend or the weekend after.

I'm also with CTS re the Buddy situation. There's no reason to say early in the week that he won't play if that's what they honestly believed. As you suggest, ticket sales aren't helped by his absence so why deliberately try to slow them? And there was no evidence from the game that he was played - to boost attendances - when he wasn't fit to play.

I'm not sure the coaching team really considers crowd numbers when playing deceptive games with player inclusions/exclusions.
                          Nor should they.
Nor should we be upset if they choose to do so.
Part and parcel of 'playing the game'
But there is no reason to call the Swans out on 'playing games' given recent history.
Particularly against Freo who have been average at best this year.
I'm OK with the Swans playing games with payers for advantage as a general rule though.

Harley talks about Dawson near end of this week?s injury update. He?s had ?a wretched run with soft tissue injuries?, now back training and near end of rehab, hope he will play in NEAFL in two to three weeks with aim of building up fitness and a return to senior team in the future.
