I can't recall the name but someone from the club tipped off the then Collingwood president and told him what the Blues were planning. The president (I'm sure someone will recall his name) put the kibosh on the proposal.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Spot on! The Collingwood president was Allan McAlister and it was he who led the move to keep the Swans alive. Carlton was the arch enemy of Collingwood and McAlister didn't want Carlton to become more powerful by moving in on the Sydney market after we "disappeared." I hate Carlton for a number of reasons but the main one is that they were just waiting for us to die in the 90s. They're a scum club and I love seeing them on the bottom of the ladder - AGAIN!

And in the days when there were sand dunes at Somerton beach (till the developers wrecked all the Adelaide beaches) there was a kiosk on the edge of the sand hills which sold the biggest, yummiest Bush biscuits.

And the football players still used drop kicks.

Ah the good old days! [emoji126][emoji126]
Lots of people in Somerton Park gad grass tennis courts in the backyard. Remember playing on one in bare feet. Showing my age, but I think the Beaumont children were from that area,

Peter Weinert was the Sydney Swans director who tipped off Allan McAlister about Carlton's move. It was a stroke of genius! I clearly remember hearing a radio news bulletin where the female presenter said it's going to be bye bye Swans! Dark days indeed. But only 3 years later we play off in GF & have never looked back.

Correction Blood Fever, on reflection it would have been Amscol icecream you liked so much in Adelaide.

The Adelaide Milk Supply Co-Operative Limited was a much loved Adelaide family company producing bottled milk, ice cream, cream, cheese and butter. We Adelaideans were convinced Amscol icecream tasted better than any other. It?s slogan which we all knew was ?it?s a food, not a fad?. Sadly Amscol closed in the 1980s.

Now the icecream Hotpotato remembers from the Wallaroo milk bar almost certainly was Golden North, a very nice creamy icecream produced in Laura in the mid north of South Australia which is only about one hour?s drive from Wallaroo. I think Golden North icecream might still be in production.

They really were dark days, KSAS, and we were very nearly gone. I remember, at the time when it all came to a head, waking up some mornings and turning on the radio to see if my club was still alive.

Questions on your very existence seem to plague every new/relocated club. GWS and Sun's are coping it now. Bears before them. A right of passage.

So these days when it occurs the reverse way, like Eddie, they are somewhat appeased but they have longterm grudges and will hang on to them.

PS: I?m a Croweater from way back too.
Never really understood this. Players just wanted to play at the highest level, that's all.

We were so lucky when you consider what happened to Fitzroy just 3 years later. Even though Fitzroy officially merged with the Brisbane Bears, in reality it was a take over & can understand why many Fitzroy supporters no longer feel connected with the club. So proud our club embraces South's history as the direct linkage has remained intact. 2 cities one team. At one point during those dark days there was also a push for us to merge with the Bears. Arrgghh!!!

And a push to change the colours to NSW blue IIRC

Good recollection BF! I think that push may've came earlier in the lead up to the club being eventually privately owned by Edelesten. I remember Bob Skilton being vehemently opposed to the changing of the colours & new name Sydney Sharks being branded about.

I remember popular saying here in Melbourne was "The only good thing to come out of Adelaide is the Grand Prix!"

And - my perception at least - is that it?s mostly one way, as Victorians couldn?t really give two hoots about South Australians or the SA perceived rivalry. It exists for State games etc, but I doubt many Victorians thinks about South Australians much beyond the event. South Australians are generally neurotically obsessed with it. The TV, radio and news papers would have something daily. When I first moved here I almost went broke buying the Age to try to get some unbiased news (luckingly the internet saved me soon after).
Thanks GS - I have similar background.

Melbourne based and a one eyed Saints supporter sent to Adelaide (maybe for my sins) for a couple of years.

Copped the anti-vic everything for ages and started to follow the Swans when they were on sunday football. Then in early 90's moved up to sydney and have been a one eyed swan ever since.

But it is true - they are a different breed in SA. Their TV, radio and newspapers are so one eyed and focused on everything SA, the rest of Australia, and in particular Victoria, just don't matter.
