There is, not surprisingly, a lot of discussion (AFL30, AFL website, BF) about the merits of Buddy being named as captain. Some were very enthusiastic (David King - surprisingly, Mark McClure). But the dominant comments seem to be "he's not a club captain, or even in the leadership group" so how can be a deserving AA captain.
Apart from the fact that it's a fictional team that doesn't actually need a real captain, I think many people seriously underestimate his leadership qualities. As one commentator said, you don't need to have the title of captain to be a leader. He's clearly the player who inspires the Swans when they are out on the ground (more so than Kennedy, IMO) and for the last couple of seasons he's organised a forward line comprising 18, 19 and 20 year olds to win enough games to make the finals. All the young players at the club talk about how much time he spends with them, helping them learn their craft.
I can't imagine him enjoying all the meetings that go with being in a club leadership team, which I imagine is why he isn't. But he's still a mighty fine leader of footballers and deserves the nominal recognition.Comment

I'm happy for him to be named captain of course.
But really he shouldn't have been.
Why wouldn't you name an actual captain, who make the AA team, to be the captain of the AA team.
Spin it any way you like, but that's pretty stupid. The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

The whole AA concept is a bit how’s your father. Its just another night for a piss up (or mineral water if playing finals).
Seriously, what are they ever going to do together ? Go and play video games?
It’s a bit too boring for mine, I switched to watch Federer’s footwork at Flushing Meadow as I’m trying to emulate it.Comment

Does it really matter? - he’s an All Australian 8 times and is still playing-if Rance can get it last year why not Buddy. The team is an honorary one. All the carry on that Hurn/Hern should have got it do you think he will end up with 8 AA’s? Probably not and it was his first AA. With all the media carryon this year I’m surprised that Tom “I touch it 40 times, not all that effectively though” Mitchell wasn’t made captain. I just hope Max Gawn gets the Brownlow.I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

I don’t think the players who received the accolade would think that looking back on their career. It’s a great achievement to be named in the AA team, it recognises an excellent year of footy and unlike the Brownlow and MVP, it acknowledges all positions On the field ( even if those lines are often a tad blurred ). I’d say your comment is a bit how’s your father. The whole AA concept is a bit how’s your father. Its just another night for a piss up (or mineral water if playing finals).
