So someone has pointed out- finally - to Adam Curley that Nick is an academy recruit, not a FS recruit. Or maybe he just reads RWO.

I'd prefer it that everyone thought of him as a FS recruit. It will stop the sooking from the VFL about our academy.

Pretty sure Grundy is heavier. Stand to be corrected. Natinui also throws him around despite Callum's best efforts.

So we have Thurlow, Clarke and Menzel who look very likely to challenge for the top22

I think Hayward might be one of our 22 from last year who will be under pressure to hold a spot

Blakey appears to need to fill out a little to play forward week in week out for 2019.....but if McCartin at the same weight and only 3cms shorter played at 17yrs of age in his first year at the club well Nick won’t be a surprise. Nik could still get 8-10 games minimum on the wing or HFF like Hayward ?

To start the season im guessing our best 22 will be picked by our coaches and leadership group as follows:

          FB: Smith, Melican, Rampe
          HB: Thurlow, AA, Lloyd
          C: Florent, Kennedy, Jones
          R: Sinclair, Parker, Heeney
          HF: Hayward, Reid, Hewett
          FF: Ronke, Franklin, Papley

          INT:
          Mills
          Macca
          Cunningham
          McCartin

          23. Clarke
          24. grundy
          25. Jack
          26. Menzel
          27. Blakey
          28. Naismith
          29. Fox
          30. Stoddart
          31. Cameron
          32. Rowbottom
          33. Rose
          34. Maibaum
          35. Oriordan
          36. McInerney
          37. Foot
          38. Ling
          39. Dawson

          39. Bell
          38. Pink
          39. Amartey
          40. Tucker
          41. Reynolds
          42. Wicks

We bought Clarke to play first team footy and I would be stunned if he wasn't in our Round 1 team, assuming there are no injuries.

Heeney implies he’s going to be playing predominantly as an “inside midfielder” this year.

                No doubt Dr

And has been mentioned by Swans management etc but it will be interesting to see where he fits in as there is fairly tough competition for the outside players this season

Actually unless I'm going do-lally I'm certain I have seen Eddie Betts in the midfield, against the Swans - and he basically won the game for the Crows.

During first half of open training match simulation, they had Hewett effectively tagging Heeney. He was certainly in the middle of the action. Looked like he had plenty to learn about the craft.

Franklin, Menzel lock eyes on Round 1 - sydneyswans.com.au

Menzel a certainty to start if fully fit ?

Menzel Reid buddy McCartin does sound exciting

Challenging to fit all the following in the forward line:

Bud, Menzel, Reid, McCartin, resting ruckman (if, as we might suspect, the new rules entail playing two rucks), resting mid (Parker, Hewitt), plus Hayward, Ronke, Papley.

And although Papley (and possibly Ronke?) might be looking for time on the ball, they will be doing that as small forwards going into the midfield rather than as front line mids going forward. Hayward had been setting up at HB for bounces and running through, but not really a wingman. So lots of challenges. How would you set it up Auntie G?

On another note, I heard that Aliir was absent from photo shoot because of family commitments in Perth. His AFLX selection is interesting: perhaps an indication of what the competition sees in him.

I think we will all have to wait see ie can we actually have 3 of the 4 forwards on the field at the one time and make it work re goals and field position vs less run

We can have one of the talls on the bench at anyone time but what opportunity cost does this exert by loosing less genuine run midfielders

I like the depth of target marks like Reid, McCartin and Menzel and it was important to have a Menzel style player be in our squad for depth and for challenging matchups

I like buddy roaming as much as possible playing an up the ground HFF anyway

I’m excited as our depth in general is strong but I am concerned the quality of many teams has jumped ahead

Yes he is, but fitness is a pretty big question mark

As well as he did last year I'm not sure that McCartin is a lock for the seniors

Agree with Buddy up the ground and wide. Reid as more conventional CHF. We also need to add Blakey to that forward mix, perhaps as a HFF, pushing up the wing. And I also agree that having a tall on the bench is not ideal. We've been playing a 5 forwards, 10 mids, 7 backs mix over the past couple of seasons, and that's not going to change. The second ruck position is the one that's got me stumped. Even if Naismith gets fit, I can't see us playing him and Sinclair in the same 22.
