Its an interesting year. There doesn't seem to be a standout swans academy player in this years lot , albeit Thorne , Parks and Ellem are I think the only ones who have played all Allies games in the series.

You would think that any Swans pick this year will possibly come from those three on that basis but not sure if one or two others may have been affected by injury or if in fact the allies team may suffer from the same bias as many other teams that are thrown together like this in that the selection panel tend to share spots around to cater for all of the represented academies/ states that make up the allies team.

Not sure if the Swans and Giants have some unwritten rule about drafting each others academy boys but I find it interesting that they rarely (if ever) seem to do so.

Green is reported as a very strong inside mid. We have more need for that type now than GWS
They have 2 first round picks so they would have the points to guzump us if they wish to

Swans have taken three players from Giants Academy in the rookie draft. Most successful by far has been Harry Cunningham. Other two were Kyle Galloway and Sam Fisher, the latter as a Category B rookie.

GWS Academy Green is shaping as a top 10, maybe top 5, could well be there when our first pick comes along - could we??
Tom Green should be a top 5 but you can forget about any chance of us getting him. Knightmare had him at no.2 a few months ago. No way will GWS pass on him.

Currently they hold pick 9 (Essendon's) and their own pick 15, so if he was bid on at pick 5 with discount it would burn just pick 9. The hope is that Green gets bid on higher than that and that the picks they hold drift out burning both first round picks.

We bid on Isaac Cumming in the 2016 ND at pick 19, they matched and we then took Hayward, so we have form!

In The Age today an article about Campbell and Gulden:

                Quite a measured article.

Interesting that Gulden is seen where he is. From his game the other day he certainly gets a lot of the ball, he is defensively strong and quite fearless BUT at times his disposal left a lot to be desired and his options were not always the best options. In saying that I thought he was still very good considering he is an underager.

Campbell on the other hand , was less involved in the game but has exquisite disposal , a raking kick and he is hard at it defensively and when he is involved he does impact the game.

If the article is any indication , Swans may easily, if they choose , get both players considering Gulden is considered a later pick.

                  I loved the quotes;
"Up until then, Campbell said, he had not been aware of the game". And
"Campbell said he would "probably not" be playing the game if not for the Swans academy".
                  Excellent justification for our academy.

Some preliminary leaks about changes to the NGA system have just appeared on the AFL website. At a quick glance it appears to give even more access to players under the NGA banner including the possible inclusion of Darwin for yet to be determined clubs.

Have to wait and see what the final report looks like ....

The zones continue to expand by the sounds of it...

That’s exactly what I thought when I read that it is expected that Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle will gain priority access to indigenous prospects in metropolitan regions - boys who will play Australian Rules anyway. Although it seems this will only apply after pick 40 so no priority access to the Tarryn Thomas equivalents.

The issue shouldn’t be that the WA/SA zones expanded the issue should be that the Vic metro zones should have contracted. With the same rules applying to Melbourne metro zones, no access until after pick 40. E.g Essendon shouldn’t be able to pick up Chris Johnson’s son via the bidding system until after pick 40.

And that North Melbourne still have full access to the remote area of Launceston. Unlike Fremantles zone of Bunbury which is the same size as Launceston.

Another article In Regards to drafting academy players

IMO the AFL administrators again have shown how inept they are at understanding how clubs will get around this loophole. It’ll just go back to clubs doing the first part of this type of deal in the two week trade period before draft night.

Then the second part on draft night via live trading.

E.g next year Sydney trade out first pick for a future first rounder in the two week trade period then match Gulden’s bid with later picks then trade back into the first round via live trading after obtaining Gulden using that future first.

Under 16 RAMs completed their National Championship campaign last week with wins over NT and Tasmania to win the Div2 title. First time since 2014 that NSW/ACT has won the Div 2 title.

Considering that both QLD and NT utilise up to four u17s in their teams , the undefeated series win was very good.

The win over Tassy on Saturday was particularly impressive with the Rams absolutely smashing Tasmania early. Half time score was 53-3 with final score 75-34.

MVP for Rams was Kai Watts from the Giants but some very good efforts from the Swans Academy boys. Swans mentioned on AFL draft central scouting notes over the two games last week were : McKenzie (twice) , Alker, Olgilvy, Edwards, Ball, Middleton, Endemann, Rogers.
