Swans chat Swans sign Irishman Barry O'Connor!

SYDNEY has doubled its Irish playing stocks, signing Colin O'Riordan's 193cm countryman Barry O'Connor. The key-position prospect hails from Wexford, in south-east Ireland.

The Swans committed to O'Connor, who turns 21 in three weeks, in recent days on a two-year contract, as is normal with Irish recruits.

Great news. Do we know anything else about the lad apart from he's a mature-aged recruit?

There's a bit on the official site from a couple of months ago: Irishman O'Connor relishing time at Swans - sydneyswans.com.au.

I think mw is attempting some wry humour.

Great news, wonder when he arrives?

Cat B rookies are free hits, plenty of very good footballers come via this route, we should always have a full compliment of them. It's why I was big on the mid season draft, it's a free hit and you may just snag a player. ND picks are precious, any other avenue to recruit is a bonus.

Welcome Barry, enjoy a long career with the Swans.

Also it creates more intensity at training to have such hungry young athletes trying to become AFL footballers

It’s infectious and this intensity drives our talent at AFL level to not slack off but to become better

Glad to see us building momentum in the picks for no down side only upside

                  Great.
                  Three Irishmen at the club.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Good. We need someone named Barry at the Swans.
We have had some good ones...Hall, Mitchell, Round.

                        *Cough*.

But yes, we were getting low on Barry's and that probably explains our poor form.

I was thinking of you too, barry.

They've now posted a longer version of the same article on afl.com.au: Swans sign 193cm Irishman after two-week trial - AFL.com.au.

I wonder why they've gone for BOC after passing on so many other Irish prospects? Was it his height? Was it the fact that COR has now come good and it's time to get another project in the door? Anyway, I agree with you, 707, that it is a free hit and good to take every opportunity to find new talent. We've got a long list now. Also, will hopefully benefit the NEAFL team (albeit maybe not right away!) which has more ruck-types than KPPs at the moment.

When the article says that we've signed him on a two year contract, does that mean the contract starts next season? I'm assuming so, but it doesn't explicitly say so. Or is there a chance that he'll be running around in the NEAFL, sometime in the next few weeks?

I'd assume a lot of diligence goes into whether they are going to hang around or not.
