Yes, we should never just accept the "that's the way it is and will be for a long time" line of thinking. The benefits for Collingwood under the current finals system are especially galling. A few years ago, McGuire was after us because of COLA, academies, etc., and his motivation was the desire for "a level playing field." Yet, last year his club got to play a Grand Final on its home ground against a higher ranked team that had already beaten his club earlier in the final series! And this weekend, his team again gets to play a final on its home ground against a higher ranked team. It's a seriously flawed competition!

Some more figures over 122 seasons (1897 to 2018):
* The minor premier has also won the premiership in 64 seasons (52.7%).
* They have been runners up in 44 seasons and not made the Grand Final 14 times. Most of the times when the have not made the Grand Final have occurred since 1931. Most finals series before then gave the Minor Premier the right of challenge for the premiership so they were guaranteed to be runners up or premiers.
* The side that has been minor premiers and runners up in the same season the most times is Collingwood (8 times). South Melbourne/Sydney are second (7 times). Essendon have done it 6 times. No other club has done it more than 4 times.
* Collingwood have the most minor premierships with 19. After being minor premiers, they won the premiership 9 times and were runners up 8 times.
* Essendon have been Grand Finalists in every year they have been minor premier except once (17 times minor premier for 11 wins and 5 losses). 1999 was the exception.
* Carlton have also been minor premier 17 times for 11 premierships and runners up 4 times.
* Brisbane Bears, Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast, GWS, University and Footscray/Western Bulldogs have never been minor premiers.
* South Melbourne/Sydney have a record of 9 times minor premier for 2 premierships (1909, 1918) and 7 times runners up, a difference of minus five. This is the biggest difference between premiers and runners up of any side. Other sides with a negative difference: Adelaide (0 - 1), North Melbourne (0 - 2) and St Kilda (0 - 3).
One more contemporary stat is that since 1996, just 26% of Minor Premiers (that’s 6 out 23) have gone on to win the flag. This period has largely coincided with a Final 8 cut off.
So for the first 99 seasons there was an almost 59% chance of a Minor Premiership/Flag double. That has dropped to 26% for the past 23 seasons.Last edited by top40; 2 September 2019, 11:06 AM.Comment
