Glass half full perspective. No fans at the ground will see west coast slip out of the eight.
It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

I wonder if the commentators will just be going on and on about the lack of crowd all game, accompanied by endless camera shots panning around the empty seats.

Alternatively it might focus their minds on the game, who knows.

What would really help the Swans would be for the AFL to impose a 'No Contested Foory' rule to increase player separation. A No Tackling rule wouldn't hurt either.

And no footy so players hands don’t touch a Sherrin touched by a potential virus carrier?

This could end up like Adam’s imaginary boomerang (mistakenly said to be a spear).

I still expect the season to be postponed. With everything that’s happening the AFL will leave it until the last minute to postpone the season.

By Wednesday morning the public will be conditioned to most sporting/entertainment events being cancelled or postponed. So when the AFL announce the delayed start to the season we will all be a lot more accepting of it.

The other alternative is, and this is a very very very remote one, playing a shortened summer competition in far north Qld and the NT late in the year.

My bet is on a shortened season though. The shorter the season the more chance of a conference system in place IMO.

I reckon they'll try to start the season if they can still - until someone says they can't. Like the NRL, the TV money from every game played (especially now there is a captive audience!) could be enough to get them through if they can eek out some form of season, even if there is no result at the end of it.

A shortened season is quite viable too, even if this drags on for quite a while. With midweek games (say 1 every 2 weeks), you could fit in 17 rounds within a 3 month period. So + finals, could get it all done in 4. So in theory could start as late as June in that case.

              Interesting times!

Actually now I can see how Swans can be a top eight side in 2020. We win the first game of the year, and they then postpone the rest of the season, extrapolating from that one result.

Either that or the whole things off and we get a good pick based on the alphabetical preseason ladder

I don’t see how they think they can cram several games in a short space of time like they’ve said using top ups.

While I fully understand it’s very possible to have their players shut off from this virus I can’t see how semi pro footy players, WAFL, SANFL, VFL etc will do that. ATM these “top ups” work in our communities which if WHO predictions are correct a fair few will become exposed to the virus.

Eliminating a lot of potential top ups from the comp.

There are also other less virulent strains like 229E, OC43, NL63 and HKU1. Coronaviruses generally cause mild upper respiratory infections. they are generally not dangerous and are unusual because they are passed on from animals to humans. MERS from Dromedary Camels and SARS from Civet Cats but they all link back to a grouping that originated from Bats. SARS came first in 2002.

SARS infected only 8,000 people worldwide but was deadly as 774, about 10%, of those infected died. But SARS disappeared by 2004.

MERS infected only 2,494, mainly in the Middle East. But it was, and is, deadly as 30% of people died. MERS continues to infect people but it is mainly people in close contact with Camels.

229E, OC43, NL63 and HKU1 all had little or no impact and the infection was mild if at all infectious.

COVID 19 is far different to any other Coronavirus as it is highly infectious. Another difference to SARS & MERS is that the majority of infections are mild. It only has a death rate of under 2% and severe infections are under 10%. This is unusual for a chronic Coronavirus infection in that it is almost as though one of the numeral infections is mixed with a SARS. I am not quoting scientific research in my last comment just an observation. This highly infectious and easily spread Coronavirus is heading for epidemic level very quickly which is another thing the others did not do. Will it disappear like SARS did or hang around like a bad smell like MERS? Abate MERS is only being transferred from Camel to Human and infection by human contact seems to have vanished.

It seems, like Flu Viruses, Coronaviruses have their time and then disappear and another one turns up some years later to replace it. They are viruses passed on by Bats to other animals, including humans. That might be a hint to be careful around Bats or animals that live close to Bat habitats. Unlike the Flu these viruses don't seem to last 12 months in their virulent form, infections seem to dwindle. Research says that this particular set of viruses, like Flu, prefer colder conditions to incubate. so TURN OFF THE COLD AIRCON AS A PRECAUTION. Do masks save you from infection? The answer is NO. They have proven to be quite useless. The problem here is that this particular group is spread by touch. Yes sneezing and coughing spread the virus but anything an infected person touches will spread it also. WASH YOUR HAND GEOFFREY. USE HAND SANITISER. TRY NOT TO USE PUBLIC TOILETS AS THERE IS A LINE OF RESEARCH THAT SUGGESTS FAECES MAY BE HIGHLY INFECTIOUS.

This is from what I have read on the subject. I am still reading research and listening to the experts. If Bill Bowtell says close the schools, the close the bloody schools. Kids are dirty little bastards at the best of times and teens are worse lol. I was a kid once I know lol. If Bowtell says ban all public gatherings and close the borders to get this under control until it disappears, bloody do it. This is the premium infectious diseases expert in our country telling it how it is.

As to deliberately exposing players. I suppose it is one way of creating a group immunity but there could be implications and drawbacks such as severe infection due to a preexisting condition. The other thing is insurance would suddenly be worthless if the clubs did this. They would also be breaking the law by deliberately infecting a person with a potentially deadly virus. I hope that brings things into perspective
It’s already at pandemic, which is worse than epidemic [emoji40]

I think it would work in GWS's favour. They've had years of practice at playing in front of empty stands with no fans (for home games at least).

I have a solution. Fly all teams to China, they can undergo the mandatory 14 day quarantine required by authorities, delaying season by 2 weeks. China's numbers are really dropping and they are getting back to normal. Maybe the AFL was a little premature cancelling the China match??

Most sensible outcome if true. Let's stop the wheel for the advised time (14 days??) and revisit it then. Season could still be on with a 17-18 round fixture if the forecast is better then. Some in the industry have been pushing for shortened seasons anyway.

The situation will probably peak in May and still be serious in June. Can't see a viable competition until August at least.
