I just noticed this on the AFL match feed:

"In the 51 ruck contests that Jarrod Witts and Callum Sinclair contested against each other, Witts won hitouts-to-advantage 10 to three, [Gold Coast] won the clearances 26 to 13 and Gold Coast outscored Sydney 4.2.26 to 1.1.7."

And Witts smashed Callum around the ground too: 14 disposals to 8, and 5 marks to 2.

It was good to have Sinclair back, as he's better than the other non-Naismith options we've been using, but his limitations were evident last night. He'll get beaten by most genuine ruckmen.

How can we clone Parker four times over?
I hope I am proven wrong, but I can't see Florent taking the next step. He is in his fourth year and is yet to really stamp his mark with a consistent run of high quality games. Simpkin, Berry, English and Perryman were all taken around him (not to mention McLuggage, McGrath and Taranto) and it would be safe to say, they are all tracking much further.

I think it's too early to tell about Rowbottom but I see more spark in him then Florent.

I'm one of those people. If I remember, I'll let you know when I wake up.

They're allowed an off night. I read Stephen Coniglio hasn't been playing lately. Parker was off last week. It happens.

My hobby horse. The number of times the ball went to a player on his own at around the ground stoppages was breath taking. I was trying to work out how we set up at throw ins but gave up. By the way they strolled out of the centre with ease also.

And the lack of talking when the ball went forward as 4 or 5 Swans flew for a mark with no one over the back. It is pretty basic stuff that not many contested pack marks are taken so why is there no one front and back at a marking contest.

Stark statistics indeed but where were our blokes and why week in and week out we haven't learned to rove to losing rucks.

For all the doomsayers out there, consider these facts:
The number of career senior games from yesterday's losing Swans side -
10 with less than 50 (4 with less than 5)
              7 with >50 but <100
              Only 2 with >150.

With numbers like that I think we're still competitive and the future looks OK

                Agreed.

It was a better game to watch then last week, but we were slaughtered in the centre bounces. It was very frustrating to watch them take the ball away with hardly any pressure.

Parker battled his guts out all day virtually single handed. McVeigh (I believe he is the mids coach) needs to look at the planning and positioning of players in centre bounces.

But we are a very young side and as long as we keep developing our younger players and with returning taller players (hopefully) we can look to the future with some hope.

Obviously this week's loss was more enjoyable than last week's, but I still would take our game against Richmond ahead of North's game against them last night. It wasn't a spectacle but we gave ourselves a slim chance to win and might have if we had kicked straighter.

Then again, 707 might say it was foolhardy and may cost us pick 2.

Florent and Rowbottom are normally the ones who do pretty well at this. Got pantsed yesterday. It's our biggest Achilles heel against quick talented teams e.g. Suns, Bulldogs etc. Especially when we have no real ruck presence. First game this year, admitted against the Crows, Naismith gave us first use in clearances. Now it's a constant struggle.

Roving to a losing ruck isn't easy. If it was, there would be no demand for blue chip (or even just capable) ruckmen.

Maybe, for Dermott, cheating IS good play.

It's not that they were off. Florent was poor after a hot start to the year, but Rowbottom was still impressive.

They just can not and will not have big impact on games. Rowbum just can't find the footy, is nearly up to 20 games and has only had one big-possession game. For an inside mid, the writing is on the wall, while Florent can't be relied on to deliver consistently.

Re Rowbottom - How long did it take K Jack to start racking up big possession tallies ? JPK ? Parker ? Even ball magnet Tom Mitchell took a while to get going. He’s a second year player, in a young struggling side.Might be a different story if he was playing in a team that was going very well and had a decent tap ruckman.

There are enough good signs to suggest he’ll be a very good player for us. Let’s revisit this 2 season from now and see how your assessment of the kid holds up hey ?

Re Ollie: had a good year last year , started the season on fire, and has fallen away badly. Poor patch of form, not lack of talent. Maybe needs a spell on a back flank or something, seemed to work for Hayward. Maybe even chuck him forward ( worked for Allir! )
