I doubt that Ling has been knocking the door down with great form in the practice scrimages, but I guess they want to see if he is up to it at the top level. I wish him all the best as its been a long wait. I am surprised that Blakey held his spot. McInerney seems stiff to me. He was OK in his last senior game and Ling gets the slot that he would have otherwise have received given Stoddart's injury. A couple of losses there in Hewitt and Heywood.
With Hewett out, we do seem a bit light on for mature bodies in the middle. So I hope: Reid back to play forward, Aliir to play back, Fox then takes the third tall and ring a ding ding, Mills to the middle.
But I doubt it’ll happen because Horse seems to love Mills leadership and direction down back.
Like everyone else, I'm pleased that Ling's persistence has finally paid off. Hope he has a blinder. Nice that Reid is back to give the forward line a bit more experience. Also looking forward to seeing if Bell has become more of a genuine inside midfielder. Though I probably would prefer O'Riordan still in the side, rather than Gray.
It's incredible the number of injuries we have this year. It's funny how something that would normally be so awful has such a big update in the year of the Covid Cup. We get to play our kids and tank without really tanking.
I think O'Riordan was probably a bit sore, but could play, and we just gave ourselves the option of using him if someone (Ling) doesn't quite make it.
Speaking of Ling, it didn't sound from the scratch match reports that he had enough game time to get a call up. But I don't think we would risk further injury to him, given what he's gone through already. There has been little documentation on his injury the past year, except I believe he had some Achilles tendon issues. Sometimes this is a plantaris tendon problem, as it was with Sam Reid in both legs. I'm not sure if they removed the tendons in Reid's case. I don't even know if Ling had any surgery at all for his condition. Let's just hope he can move on from a tough start to his AFL career. He's got some real talent and should be an important part of the Swans' rebuild.
Happy to see Bell get another go. I was hoping that we would bring in another tall defender, instead of bring Gray back into the side. It sounded like Melican was over his injury. Although we always seem too short in defence, we handled it pretty well against the Suns. Maybe Blakey can be given a run in defence. It did wonders for Hayward.
Even with all the injuries, we still have some talent waiting to get a game. That's the best sign of what we can look forward to in the coming seasons.
Finally get a chance to see how gray and Taylor go at the feet of a genuine key position forward in Reid . Surprised at the Ling selection thought he might need a few more seconds games to get some continuity first but I’ll back the selectors in as he has massive upside it’s just been his body that’s let him down . Bell I liked the look of in his few games last year .

Yes, it does look like Hawthorn have more tall forwards, than we have tall backs. Though I suppose that Dawson could also drop back, if needed.
Feels like the club is using the AFL to develop players in the absence of the NEAFL.
2020 is a free hit
It makes 100% sense. We have injuries, young guys need game time and 2020 is a right off.
Just watched Matt Ling's video on the club website and he looks a good size. Certainly more meat on his bones than Stoddart. A few have mentioned that they don't feel that he's killing it in the scratch matches but it's hard to get people to notice when you're playing the small defender role. I remember there were times I barely noticed Smooch on the field and it was only when I realised someone like Rioli had barely touched it that I realized how well he had played.
