Otherwise, we may see a surprise with a more established player making way.

Teams will also not be out until Friday night for us - AFL changing to naming 24hrs prior to kick off like last year.
Theres no way Warner misses. If JL could find a spot for 3 draftees then finding one for Warner will be easy

Starting to get a vague recall of that, now that you've mentioned it. And of course, the main reason that I recall the 2004 game so clearly, is that like many of our finals wins, I've watched it a number of times.

I agree. What I have seen of Warner in the pre season games has been impressive and I would dearly love him to play in round one. Hewett has been disappointing and I am not sure if he will get a game.

          SO:
          Rampe McCartin Lloyd
          Melican Dawson Cunningham

          Hickey Kennedy Mills
          Florent Rowbottom Blakey

          Heeney Reid Hayward
          Papley McDonald Wicks

          Gulden, Campbell, Parker, Hewett

Question marks: Warner in for Hayward? Or Hewett? Unlikely I would have thought.
No news on McInerney and Stephens in injury update.

How has Hewett been disappointing? He had back surgery last year, and we've seen one game from him in the pre season across half back. He's been really harshly judged.

I'm all for Warner being in the side, but I'm not sure who comes out for him. I struggle to see Horse dropping Hayward, even though he probably feels like the right option.
Rowbottom and Wicks are ahead in the queue.

It's not a question of who we think should be in, but who we think the match committee will select..

Twice in the preseason Warner found more of the ball than Hayward Rowbottom or Wicks. Equalled Hewett in the last one. If Hewetts not fit he shouldnt be taking a spot in the team until he is.

Warner shouldnt be behind any of them.

Wow! Three debutants! More than I expected. I was most bullish about Errol but all three is super exciting. The remaining team selection is also an intriguing situation. I can't pick it. Except I think there is going to be at least one surprise omission.

I think your prediction, O'Reilly Boy, will be close to the money except I had become hopeful that Stephens and McInerney might be ready to be selected and get a look in. Maybe they need to play a practice match first. Incidentally, do we know if there are any more practice matches planned for our reserves?

Is there any chance we would omit Melican? Probably not because they may well play Daniher, Hipwood + Oscar McInerney in their front half and that's too much for McCartin & Rampe to cover and with Fox unavailable and Brand unsighted it seems there are no other contenders.

I think that we won't select a second ruck or third tall in the front half. Probably a good strategy in wet conditions.

It's going to be a year with a lot of competition for spots! What a great situation to be in. So much young talent pressing for a spot.

I think Warner is a strong chance to play because of his preseason form and the fact he’s a point of difference to the established plodders.

Josh Kennedy was asked: “Which players will become household names by the end of the season?” And replied: “Chad Warner”

I’d suggest Hewett out, but they might give him the tagging job on Lachie Neale (wonder if they’ll give Gulden a crack on Neale?)

Round 1 2014 vs GWS at their ground. I was there, it was pretty impressive - lightning struck the stadium at one point.

I'd forgotten it was Franklin's debut for the Swans, just the one goal. And first win over the Swans by GWS, who seemed to benefit and regroup after the weather interruption.

A tad harsh there, Mark. If you are talking about Joey and Parker as the “plodders”, blessed with pace they might not be but they are still comfortably our best mids. Ollie, Rowbottom, the Lizard certainly have leg speed.

But i hope Warner plays too. Rebuilding. Young team playing for the future. If we have a capable young player ready to play then we have nothing to lose and everything to gain by getting games into him. Unsure who makes way for him. Selection will not be easy. The heat is on for spots. Its fantastic to see!

                        He's not ahead of Rowbottom.
Wicks is our first picked pressure forward.
Hayward is a different role type completely.

I can't see the match committee picking Warner ahead of any of those players. But given the conditions, my choice would be Warner over Hayward.

He is a mid and so he should. In his two senior games as a small forward he got 6 and 8 touches.

That was last year. Wasnt ready. New year and its a clean slate. Hes had a superb preseason while others were just solid, it must count for something. As Neon Bible said above wehave some good competition for spots. Solid might not make the cut. Form matters, we must have our best team possible out there on Saturday night against the flag favourites. Imagine if we are thrashed with a handful of out of form players who are passengers while a fit and raring to go Warner watches from the sidelines. No thanks.

Reasonable argument TB, Warner was excellent in his last showing. Hard as nails, quick off the step, got to the right places. Damaging, played with enthusiasm and heart.

The caveat to your argument is that you make it seem like Warner was the only one who had a good day and the others dropped off. That was not the case. Wicks had 16 possessions, 1 goal, 9 tackles, 6 score involvements, most tackles and pressure acts from anyone in iur team, and led the team in Fantasy points. Rowbottom had 17 possessions, 2 goals, 11 contested possessions only Parker and Joey had more, 6 tackles and led the team for Supercoach points. Hayward kicked 4 or 5 goals in the intraclub match a month ago and is an integral medium forward in our setup with Isaac. For established players they have showed enough form. I can assure you that Longmire and the match selection committee will not use a solitary pre season game to base its selection decisions around !!

+1 your case against George though. He did not look ripe. Give him some time in the reserves to get himself right. Warner can hold down the fort until then.

I agree, my point is that he is an inside mid, not a small forward so the comparison is not apples with apples. All roles on the field are specialized and hopefully the days have gone where a promising mid is chucked into a small forward position only to fail.
