So close. They are tough to beat on their home deck.

Generally speaking (and some instances of individual cleverness aside), we really don’t play wet weather football well. I know it was not really raining much during the game, but the ground was wet which makes the ball slippery. The amount of times we made poor choices in the conditions was infuriating. It made me wonder if the players are just so well drilled that they are conditioned to make the choices they make regardless of the situation.

Having said all that, we fought really hard and with a bit coolness at the end could have won. I thought we might pack it in after the 3rd quarter, so it was great to get the lift. Buddy played well and is certainly a confidence player. I hope this carries over to future games.

The loss is costly, but we are still ahead of the ledger. Wear the mistakes, take the positives and move on.

Heeney: 24 disposals. With a hand that is still recovering from a fracture (and by this I mean less than the 6 weeks required for fractures to heal, irrespective of the metal holding the bones together). If that’s a shocker, his good games should be sensational

Freo equal on points with Richmond and now only one win behind us and were tipped to make the finals by many at the start of the year. A tough loss but not as bad as the Suns game.

Heeney was the only one providing some contested marks on the wing. He had to push back a lot in the last 2 quarters as our midfielders were being smashed.
It was also pleasant to see Buddy marking the ball which rarely happens. So much for wet footy !
Rowbottom did a lot of things right but Fyfe was just too good for him. But he did try his heart out.
Not sure about Warner Stephens and Blakey though. They just did not have any presence in the 3rd quarter.

Agree with GoSwannies. It was disappointing like most losses are but putting it into perspective, we lost by 2 points away in Perth with multiple younger players having some of their poorest games. Hickey was also clearly inconvenienced after the knee knock early allowing Lobb and Darcy to dominate. I also don’t underestimate the loss of Fox to our backline especially when he is being replaced by Clarke who is not really the guys for that job.

What was Florent thinking? Kicked to a 2 on 1 instead of 2 unmarked Swans players. Let himself down there.

Obviously shouldn’t have got to this point in the first place though...

We’ve beaten the Lions, Tigers and Geelong. And lost to GW$, Melbourne and Freo by a combined losing margin of 13 points. With a fairly young side. I think that the season hasn’t been a waste so far

Similar to the Melbourne loss, where we had one dud quarter, but were probably the better side for the rest of the game. Be nice if we could get rid of those flat quarters, but that's easier said than done, as they're also the result of the opposition playing very well.

I think Hickey getting injured cost us. While it was admirable how he battled on, we did lose the hit outs 59-29. Which I think contributed to Freo getting on top in the clearances in the second half. And at times, that enabled them to maintain control the ball.

On the positive side, Dawson had a very good game. Franklin showed how idiotic it is, for people to write him off. Mills had an excellent first half, but faded in the second. Rampe contributed his usual sterling effort. And it was a strong act of collective will, to get back into the game, after we looked gone at three quarter time.

Apologies if I’ve caused any distress. My wife has given me books to read on empathy. My lack of empathy is a personal shortcoming. My personal view is that you should just move on from umpiring calls. Bit like Her Majesty “never complain”.

I must be more empathetic and understand that many supporters have complaints about the umpires and believe that the umpiring is always unfair towards the Swans. I therefore apologie again for any offence caused.

                      Great game of football.

Great to see key forwards play very well (Franklin and Lobb).

Dawson was brilliant. That kick through the middle to Kennedy was magic.

Warner, Kennedy, Hewitt and Parker were solid on most occasions.

Fyfe a brilliant footballer for Fremantle.

Now I’ll decompress with a bit of “Below Deck” (Netflix show).

There is no doubt we are playing better than what we expected at the start of the year. Except for the suns game we have not been outplayed a lot. It will take time.
I reckon a few players need some rest but it’s not coming for 3 more weeks. That is a real danger.

After ignoring all the rowbottom talk for the last few weeks, I decided to keep a close eye on him this week.
He tries to play like fyfe, with a body of a teenager. Which ain't going to work. A few more pre seasons and his body will grow into his playing style, and he will be fine.

Blakey on the other hand needs a good taking to, always trying to do the spectacular when the ordinary will do. Wasteful.

                          Both are best 22 though.

He also kicked a goal. Probably not a shocker!

Why are we losing the inside 50s to such a degree? Is it as simple as getting smashed in the midfield or is it allowing the game to come to the backline as we seem to set ourselves up so much better (usually) from the back?

Any thoughts on Hickey? Should he now be rested for a few weeks? And if so, would it be too early for Naismith to be his replacement?
