Gill had many connections and advantages and used them. If your criticise Gill for using his advantages then you may as well criticise Lance Franklin for being born with greater athletic potential than any AFL footballer in history and choosing to use that athletic advantage to derive fame and fortune.

Stevo, maybe you believe everyone with advantage should follow Bill Shorten lead by graduating from Xavier College and becoming a hero of the working man.
How do we know Gil is athletic?

No, I just reckon they should recognise their privilege and how it's given them an easier path to the top and stop acting like they deserve more than others simply because of their lofty position in society....and in Gil's case, start acting in the interests of everybody, not just those at his level of status or those who scratch his organisations back and expect something back.....ie: other powerful Victorians in the footy industry.

Of course there is noble wealthy people who do care for others....but there's not enough of them. Re: you're Bill Shorten comment.....my answer is 'why not?' or does it make more sense to you that they become heroes of the upper class?

So, can you honestly say that the interests of interstate clubs, particularly the club you apparently barrack for, are now better off under Gil than before he started? I think not.

This is my problem with Gill. He did nothing to capitalise on the work of Demetriou to ensure the AFL continued its transition to a national game. Gill was a step back to the VFL boys club, and for this, many measures that McGuire and co had whinged about that benefitted interstate clubs, were stripped away to the benefit of the Victorian clubs undoing a lot of the hard work of the Demetriou years.

For all of Demetriou's flaws he really did help the AFL become a national game, and recognised the need to listen to voices outside of the Vic bubble.

It went on in ways big (trade ban) and small (umpiring).

            Ramps said it best.

                    .
You are missing the point. Gill has no talent, and relies on his connections. This is fine if you are just managing some hedge fund for the yacht club, and expectations are small.
Gill, if born in Moonie ponds, would have probably rising to the ranks of middle management at the local council, if he was lucky.

Maybe this post should be moved to the Rowbottom thread.

Was on the Carlton supplementary list and played many years of A Grade amateurs. I think you need to be a good athlete to reach those levels.

Were you frustrated with Gill because he wasn’t more supportive of ANZ Stadium as an AFL venue?

Andrew Pridham has declared today “that the AFL has big shoes to fill”.

I think the negative Red and White voices on Gill will now go to ground as nobody on this forum will contradict the Swans President.
