Despite being a national competition for the past 30 years, it's still run like the VFL. You can witness that today by the 'marque' game of the round given to two Victorian clubs. Repeated next weekend again. In effect, the non Victorian clubs are subsidising the Vic clubs by giving them these free slots for promotion, crowds, members and corporates.

So, the next CEO has to come from outside the Victorian bubble.. Peter V'Ladys is perfect. He knows the expansion market like the back of his hand
First move to be made is for voting rights in the commission on to be based on state participation numbers, rather than clubs. NSW jumps from 11% to 16%, and most importantly Victoria drops below 30%. Now the say comes from the states that are actually driving grass roots growth.
From that, naturally AFL teams will naturally disperse to the areas that need them. To facilitate that, a private ownership model is required, and get rid of propping up teams with no strategic value (eg,Norf ).

The last two grand finals have proven that they don't need the MCG, and therefore grand finals should be auctioned off to a bidding system like in the US. If you think about it, the MCG has bid, and won, the next 30 grand finals in a closed process where no one else could bid. Corruption 101.

These simple changes will grow the game exponentially in the coming years.
Some good points Barry and while I agree the GF should not be at the MCG every year, it should just be played at the higher teams home ground.....no 'bidding'.

Also, I agree the next CEO should be non Victorian but I would hate to see our game called 'footba'.....so no V'Landys for me.

A bidding process for grand finals maximizes revenue, provides some degree of certainty, and allows clubs in those regions to contribute to the event. The Norf-Melbourne-breakfast, becomes the swans-breakfast.

I agree an earnt grand final is better and will probably come about eventually.

Racing Victoria is on its knees, so I think if we offer him a 4 day a week role as AFL CEO, so he has a day or two spare to follow his passion (killing racing Victoria), he would be ok.

To be far Gill was only 3 days a week equivalent if you count Polo, au pairs, long lunches, and general incompetence.

It woukd seem that there is a lack of football playing and admin experience currently on the AFL Commission, and a lack of membership from the Northern states. Some pundits have suggested that the Swans last CEO should be on the Commission and rumour has it that Gil is not in favour of Brendon Gale as the next CEO (not that he has a vote)!

With the high incidence of concussion, in the past, the last person id want running the code is an ex player. God knows how much congitive decline he has.
