Rd 7 vs Brisbane @ SCG - Match Thread

That game answered my questions about where we stand relative to Brisbane. Disappointing, but about the expected result. I saw a lot of Harris Andrews last night when I was hoping to see a Swans forward.

A few positives - angry fired-up Buddy is always fun to watch from behind the goals. Showed some fight in the third, some good patches of play but just not enough today. I think they'll be better for it and learn a lot from the game.

Stats time! Buddy is now second on the list for most games kicking multiple goals. He's kicked 6+ in 35 games, only 4 of which were losses.

All in all not a loss that calls for any drastic reactions. The second quarter cost us the game on the scoreboard but we should have been in front after the first quarter as we seemed to struggle with converting the inside 50 advantage we had into scoreboard pressure.
The rest of the game was pretty even and stats wise pretty close apart from a couple of areas.
We hand balled about 50 times more than the Lions and they kicked about 50 more times than us.
Turnovers were also 71 to 61 in the Lions favour. This might indicate they applied more pressure on the player with the ball forcing players to handball.
It certainly felt like it in the second quarter.
Overall I liked:
Peter’s efforts and he looks like he is feeling at home and building some rapport with the midfield.
Callum just keeps on delivering and looks like a certainty for the AA team.
Chad was great biggest metres gained on the ground by far and really creates a buzz when he gets moving.
Luke worked tirelessly and lead the team in clearances and contested possessions
JPK was more than serviceable applied a lot of pressure and is building form nicely
Lance no comment needed ????

I didn’t like :
Our defence
Paddy was sorely missed which given it’s his first season as a defender and he has played only a handful of games is a wrap on him but a concern for us.
We can’t carry Dane Jake and Harry into next season.
Playing Tom without having a run in the VFL he wasn’t ready and it showed.
James having a fairly quiet game after a promising start and providing ammunition for some.
Missing early reasonably gettable goal opportunities
Letting Zorko get off the leash in the second quarter

The Lions are a good team and we were neither embarrassing or disgraced and it gave us a indication as to what we need to address for the next time we play them.

Actually, I'd be interested in your view if it was about the question I asked - which is about what appeared to be a coaching call in the third quarter and what could be seen at the ground vs on TV. See that bit where I say "I'm not trying to praise or knock any particular players here".

Fauna, pretty much agree. Our defence was unco-ordinated a lot. Out first quarter was excellent apart from the misses and they grabbed the momentum in the second, to which we were too slow to react. But we will learn and the Lions are a very good team for us to learn from. Then after we exploded in the third, thanks to Buddy, and won the clearances, we couldn’t maintain the pressure. Understandable when you’re playing a top team. This was crucial to the result- a top team wrestles the momentum back. We were certainly not disgraced but simply outplayed by a better team. They had contributors all over the ground whereas we had only around half of our team, with most of our defenders playing well below their best.

As we knew beforehand, this game showed where we really are at: good but not great.

Would love to see Ramps defend the samll forward. He is criminally undersized for what has been asked of him for so long.

I remember when the goal post incident was his only brain fade,he has one or 2 every week now that more often than not costs goals.

Paddy out obviously didnt help him or Blakey who was required as a tall defender too

Campbell and Florent were strong today.

Rampe, Lloyd and McCartin were not great.

Blakey was ok. Cunningham was beaten a couple of times by Charlie Cameron which was to be expected given his class.

Not all of the back six/seven (with rotation) had a poor day.

Interesting to note that the most dominant time Cameron had was when Harry wasn't there.

I think its clear this year that Rampe has lost form - he's been poor almost every week. We know he's probably in the last few years of his career, so fingers crossed he can refind some form.

Ok then . In short Neale kicked RB's backside . He was tagging him and make no mistake it was a hard tag , but he lost Neale too often . Then we started getting smashed in clearances and became obvious our midfield was too defensive . Having the tagger there is being 1 mid short . Cant afford that against a quality outfit like the Lions . So RB was given the boot played the rest of the game off a flank and we went for more traditional man on man set up 2nd half . Mills tried his best , last week was his day, this week was Neale 's. The rest were there to be more attacking .

could say Neale single handedly beat our midfield as he made us plan around him which is a win in itself - forced us to go defensive early , it didn 't work, and by the time we tried to match them offensively in the mids , Neale was already doing as he pleased . Thats just good coaching by Fagan and great play by a Brownlow medalist . Not Horse 's best night at the office but we move on .

In defence of RB , there aren 't many who could stop Neale when hes in the form hes in and RB is young and developing but gee , if he cant nail tagging roles then big trouble for him . It was telling that he was the one we gave the flick to to improve the midfield in the 2nd half . Preview of the future in my opinion and i was disappointed for him but not surprised . But he did some nice things , kick to Buddy was good .

It caught us out by surprise, gave them extra punch, drive and goal kicking with Ollie doing a good job on Bailey, and he knew the more hard, mature bodies he had around the ball against our young midfield, the better.

Yep . Created their surge . I knew we had been outcoached when Heeney was stationed in defence . That is a huge win for the opposition . They had too many weapons firing and not enough of ours were

Hard to argue with you TB and I appreciate you providing some balance in your comments.
It definitely wasn’t one of the better performances by James but as you say Neale is a class act and doesn’t get beaten that often. I would like to think this was a learning experience for him and the coaching staff are sure to highlight were he fell short and provide feedback.
Neale is putting together a season so far that could see him having a second Brownlow to his name.
Either elite or above average in all of the key performance criteria so far.

Yep that's him - Gianfagna. He was horrendous in the dogs game earlier in the year too - he just pulls a lot more shockers then standard out it seems.

He's probably the worst umpire in the league at the moment....and that is saying something. The female umpire has gone from very good to very bad in the space of two years....associating with Victorian cheats will do that.

The standard of AFL umpiring gets worse every year. It's going to affect future game attendance figures IMO if it's not fixed...it's that bad.

Really sad that we have a bunch of deluded micro managers in charge of the game at the moment.

Neale is close to being the best player in the comp. The list of opposition players he has beaten is very long. It's possible Dane
is playing injured. It won't be the first time. He is a very experienced defender, and we always need some old heads out there,
especially as the playing list transitions as it is now.
