No need any more for umpires to make reports on match days, every second of the game is looked at anyway. Holding on to a bit of yesteryear that technology has now overtaken. Typical AFL.

Agree. One of the commentators mentioned how Papley had said afterwards he was unsettled during the game by the report
(a perfectly normal reaction of course), and then the report turns out to be absolutely nothing and never should have been
made in the first place. 17 score involvements by Tom btw on Friday night, a season high by any player. Man, things can
change quickly, last week I wanted him subbed out for poor set shot kicking.

        Well, that bit hasn’t changed.

He also could’ve given off a hand pass or 2 on Q1 but chose to snap (& miss)

Watching the replay, they even credited him for a quick handpass to Heeney when it was actually Hayward - then the camera focused on Tom for the next 1 minute when it wasn’t even his doing.

I wonder if the coaches had a quick word at qtr time?

Apparently we play Sweet Caroline at quarter time out of respect for the Boston Red Sox with whom we are “affiliated”

They started playing the song in 1997 when the woman in charge of ballpark music’s friend had a baby named Caroline.

And in 2002 they made it a tradition to play it at every game.

I haven’t been down the rabbit hole of our affiliation with the baseball club yet.

We have an affiliation with Boston Red Sox?

The only link to USA that I was aware of was that the tune to our theme song is the tune to the Victory March of Notre Dame University in Indiana.

While I knew that the Boston Red Sox played it, I just assumed that we adopted it, because some official went on an American study trip, and justified it, by deciding that because Americans played the song, then we should play it too.

Not sure if anyone has made a call out of the amateur hour commentary - especially from BT. This was especially grating when watching the replay and I wasn't caught up in the action.
                    - Amartey takes a strong mark over Treloar: "and Keath takes the mark"
                    - umpire reports Papley (who is also standing the mark and gets confronted by Liberatore): "not sure who the high contact is against"
                    - Franklin hands off to Papley who snaps through the goal: "and Franklin makes it two!"
Ok, that last one was confusing watching from home, but he is AT THE GROUND. What is the point of BT? As Richie Benaud said: "put your brain into gear and if you can add to what's on the screen then do it, otherwise shut up"

Anyway, I'm sure some people love him.

It's everywhere. We went to a Pirates-Brewers game in Pittsburgh in April and they played it there too. Neil has stopped touring but
he's still raking in those performance royalties. When it comes to stadium PA systems put it in the same category as "We Will Rock
You" or "Hells Bells''. Can a game go ahead without them.

The affiliation with the Red Sox will, no doubt, be because of the, er, Red and White, but also because in 2004 the Red Sox won their first World Series since trading Babe Ruth in 1918…known during those 86 years as “The Curse of the Bambino.” Ruth was traded to their most hated rivals, The New York Yankees. In 2005, the Sydney Swans…..”Here it is!”
"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005

I lived in the US for several years and I can tell you that the Notre Dame Fighting Song is very well known over there. They have a huge following in College Football having won numerous national titles and its played by the marching band before every game. All of their games are nationally broadcast so people are well aware of their team and success. It was a great choice by our earlier administrators to make it the Swans' tune. Thanks for sharing that great rendition, its very stirring!

It's rubbish, completely lacking the vital Banjo solo that is such an intrinsic and stirring element of the Swans version.

That’s harsh. I thought it was a pretty stirring rendition. Banjo’s would’ve helped tho. Maybe deliverance style?
