Really pisses me off that the Fox Footy and Melb media are making the Swans out as spoilers and upsetting the Draft and teams. This is war and at the end of the day, you are in the "winning" game, not playing tiddliwinks!!! Proof of our draft strategy will be measured by our win column and premierships, not being "nice guys"

Caleb Mitchell at 187 cm is the tallest player we've taken in the past 2 national drafts (7 picks). Whatever KB say, we must be satisfied with our KPP stocks, if we see what he does and not what he says.
I saw the KB interview with Sarah Ollie. What I like about Beatson is that he's just as arrogant as Ludwig. He doesn't care what he does. He just wants to be different.
BTW, Mitchell is another left footer.

Here's the inside story of the draft:
Our covid violation fines depleted our soft cap. The list management team could only afford 1 field trip. They drove out to Country Victory, watched a game between the Gippsland Power and Murray Bushrangers, drew up our draft list, and drove home.
We've recruited Caleb Mitchell of the Murray Bushrangers with pick 40 of the 2022 NAB AFL Draft.
Well respected for his two-way running, the dynamic wingman enjoyed a stellar 2022 season for the Murray Bushrangers that saw him play 10 games in the NAB League.
Arguably his best performance came against Gippsland, the club of previous two draftees Jacob Konstanty and Cooper Vickery, that saw amass 31 disposals and two goals.

We could have drafted:
Harry Barnett
Lachie Cowan, and
Isaac Keeler
A lot of folks on here would have been real happy about that, but KB knows better. We will see.
Wouldn't it be terrible to find out next year that KB is suffering from Mad Cow's Disease. At least it might explain a few things.Comment
-
Ok, mad cows aside, an attempt at logic.
Our KPD stocks are actually pretty good and mostly young: Rampe, McCartins, Fox, Francis, Gould. It's hard to see an obvious vacancy.
Ruck. Well. We ostensibly for have two first teamers, although both flawed. Maybe we would have chosen Barnett at 27, but preferred Konstanty at 20. So be it.
Inside mids: we just drafted Sheldrick and Roberts. Warner is young. Gulden potentially.
Vickery, as someone mentioned, is that small, accountable rebounder to do an apprenticeship under Lloyd.
Looks total Lloyd clone per video and this:
'Cooper Vickery has enjoyed a consistent year at NAB League level for Gippsland Power, where he became a reliable ball user out of the defensive half and running down the ground. His transitional running from the back 50 and then rotating onto a wing allowed him to find plenty of the ball, and his metres gained were always high. ...
Often found coming out of half-back, Vickery is a player who will look for the one-two be it via hand or short kick, and that allowed him to set his side up in transition.' Cooper Vickery Draft Profile - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central (formerly AFL Draft Central).
Geez.
Mitchell is interesting, given Stephens and McInerney seem to be our wings. It might be a best available deal. Impressed with his clips. He's tall. Reminds me of Maxfield with that hard running and booming left, flowing blonde locks trailing. Short odds Longmire will describe him as someone who 'plays with real power' in his first interview re the draftees. I like him already.Comment

Cooper Vickery has been recruited to be the next Nick Smith:
KB: “We just think we have been looking for a small defender that can play on the likes of Kysiah Pickett, Charlie Cameron and Cody Weightman.”
There might be a bit of a Jordan Dawson replacement about Mitchell.
KB: “He's one of those guys who can get up and back on the wing - those guys who can compete in the air, and play that role, are invaluable."

Worth scrolling down to the interview with Kinnear here: AFL Draft 2022: Talking Points from night two, analysis, winners and losers, bolters, sliders, biggest steal, Sydney bids, Brayden George, Collingwood.
Puts it plainly re Vickery: been looking for a small defender for some time, if they didn't bid on him they wouldn't get one. Sees him as capable of playing on good small forwards. He's certainly quick enough: 7th over 20m at the combine. 2022 AFL Draft Combine Test ResultsComment

It's nearly certain that we will add Will Edwards as a Cat B rookie.
Will Edwards Draft Profile - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central (formerly AFL Draft Central)
Maybe we really rate him and along with the addition of Francis, we didn't feel that we needed another KPP in this draft. His size and under 3 second 20 m sprint time is very impressive.
I count that we should still have 2 spots open on our list, so a fair chance that we make a first round rookie selection.
Let's not forget that we traded into a good 2023 draft position as well. The overall result of this draft year is pleasing.
Like most, I was surprised that we didn't go tall this year. We seem overstocked with outside running players. I'm sure that all the players we take are hard at it, 2-way players. And don't we love those lefties.
I've often mentioned that this rebuild started 6 years ago when we traded out Tom Mitchell. We now have a talent rich young side that can play a quick and high pressure game suitable to the times. We are ahead of the curve in the direction the game is going. We need to play consistent footy from week to week and get our preparation right when coming off an irregular schedule, something we struggled with this year.
Our main competition next year, Geelong, Brisbane and Melbourne, all improved their lists, so nothing will come easy. With the exception of the GF, we showed that the plan is working. It's always going to be difficult to take that final big step. Every club is striving toward the same goal.Last edited by Ludwig; 29 November 2022, 11:13 PM.Comment

Every year Beatson completely wrong foots all the diligent RWO researchers completely with his selections. Not only can't we guess who he'll pick, based on this year we can't even guess what kind of player he'll pick.
Please stop referring to yourself in the 3rd person, it worries me.
Can anyone tell me by what criteria did Vickery qualify for the Hawks NGA?
Is he of indigenous heritage? Or a new arrival to Oz?Comment

Good pick up Luddy
I forgot about Nat Eswards brother Will.
I likely development KPP that we can move along slowly given our depth of Macs x 2, Rampe, Francis, Melican and now most likely Will Edwards or even Amartey if he can't make it as a forward.
.......
Re Caleb Mitchell he does appear our Dawso type replacement ie that guy that cam cover stacks of kms up and down the win but defensive cam sit on HBF and cut off the opposition's exit to the wing and or nullify an entry to the HFF pocket."be tough, only when it gets tough"

People should not be surprised that we didn't pick any talls - Dalrymple and Beatson both stated in interviews prior to the draft that we didn't rate them. I understand how we will need another key forward and ruck in the coming years but I am only hoping that we have one or two in mind as trade targets next year. Again, Dalrymple is on record as saying "draft for talent, trade for need".Comment

And on Cooper Vickery; after skimming many articles, where why he was tied to Hawthorn wasn't mentioned, I clicked a link in a Hawthorn Big Footy thread, that said he has some indigenous heritage. Interestingly, none of the keen Hawthorn fans on the thread, had any idea that he was a part of their NGA, until nominations were announced.
Now that he's been drafted, I quite like the idea of us trying to find the next Nick Smith.Comment

Yes, I must admit that I didn't take much interest in assessing draft prospects this year, because deep down I knew that whoever I favoured would not be picked.
