Lachlan Cabor and Caiden Cleary are in Adelaide this weekend as part of an AFL Academy squad of 34, from which a team will be chosen to play a game against a Port Adelaide SANFL team on Saturday. It will be a curtain closer to the Brisbane/N. Melbourne game, beginning at 4pm. What a thrill for them just to be part of it all.

The academy side is playing against the Oakleigh Chargers at 11am today. I assume that it can be watched on the Talent League app.

Behind 31-17 at half time, in a hard fought but scrappy game. Oakleigh have handled the strong crosswind a bit better and hit a few more targets.

May and Kirk are continuing their good form. With our VFL team lacking inside mids, it'll be interesting to see if he gets a reasonable amount of midfield time there later in the season. Also quite liking the work of underager, Joe Harrison. With Cleary out, he's spending more time at the contests and has produced some tough efforts. He also kicked a nice running goal from about 40 metres out.

Podmore-Taylor has taken a few nice grabs, but unfortunately let himself down, by ramming the ball into the post, after taking a pack mark on the goal line.

Don't know what the free kick count is, but it seems very hometown. Including a silly charity goal for rushing a behind, when allegedly not under sufficient pressure. When the whistle went, I assumed it was for the Oakleigh forward pushing our defender into the fence.

Behind 57-31 at the final change. Probably had the territorial advantage in that quarter, but missed too many forward targets, allowing Oakleigh to counter-attack effectively.

Rookie Me has named Caiden Cleary as one of the best, in the AFL Academy v Port Adelaide reserves match.

Scouting Notes: AFL Academy vs. Port Adelaide SANFL - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central

I only watched about 20 minutes or so, but he was doing well to match it with the more mature Port bodies. Also, that twenty minutes was enough to see why Harley Reid is the overwhelming favourite to be the number one pick. He looked like an AFL player going up against an academy team.

Our academy side is playing Brisbane at 1.30 today. Which is a bit irritating, as much of the match clashes with our game against the Giants. I mean, how hard would it be to schedule a match that didn't clash?

                Anyway, this is the team.

                B: Liam Lieschke (13), Ethan Hyams (16), Jeromos Mills-Vasas (28)
HB: Nicholas Andreacchio (1), Christian Webster (34), Khy Gibbs (33)
C: Ned Hawkins (29), Caiden Cleary (27), Tye Gander (23)
HF: James Lugsdin (25), Harrison Podmore Taylor (31), Cooper Mcclennan (2)
F: Max Rider (12), Jed Robin (37), Noah Chamberlain (30)
Fol: Caleb May (36), Indhi Kirk (11), Joe Harrison (9)
Int: Cameron Este (32), Owen Turner (15), Joshua Nicholls (21), Hamish Morrison (18), Charlie Winney (4), Lachlan Cabor (7)

In front 2-2 to 0-1 at quarter time, but I think we had the wind advantage. The usual suspects were good in midfield, with Cleary possibly the best. Webster made some useful runs out of defence and Gander looked like he was enjoying being switched back to the wing.

Watched the final quarter during half time. We won 61-23. From what I saw, our pressure was very good, with lots of useful contributions.

Ta. The Talent League app usually puts up a replay within a day or two.

A couple of reasonable sized defenders in there.

I was actually a little bit surprised that Edwards was rookie listed ahead of Webster. Not that that’s anything against Edwards. I just thought Webster performed slightly better last season. Although, I think Webster has some sort of hybrid VFL/Academy contract; so he should get some sort of VFL time to push his case.

Gander is lightly framed, so is probably better suited as a wing or rebounding defender, although he has filled in pretty well as an academy key position player.
