Good news! It would be great to have a Carmichael-Chamberlin combination follow in the footsteps of Gulden-Campbell, Heeney-Mills.

I didn't watch any of the U16 games so I don't know if he got any games, and if he did, how he went, but there's a name of interest in the listed squad (Swans Academy is on page 11 of the linked document) wearing number 5. Looks like he has some growing to do, but he doesn't turn 16 until almost the end of the year, so hopefully there is a spurt to come.

A write-up on the AFL website with a brief overview of the results of each match: Vic Metro, Brisbane Lions claim 2023 U16 Boys Champs titles.

Sydney Swans Academy finished 5th out of 6 with a 1-2 record. That result is better than it appears because the Academy had a difficult fixture. They played the three top teams (Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS) for one 24-point win against GWS, while playing no matches against the two sides that finished 4th and 6th (Tasmania, 1 win against NT, Northern Territory, no wins, 3 losses over 100 points, 18.5%).

Gold Coast have five in the AA team. Have great prospects in this years draft and looking good or the future. Should be a powerhouse in the future if they can just put it together.

The regional breakdown is interesting. There were nine players selected from the traditional powerhouses of Victoria, SA, and WA, while fourteen came from the areas that make up the Allies at U18 level. If that keeps up, in a few years time we might hear calls to revamp the U18 format, because it's unfair on the Victorian kids.

            POOL A (9):

South Australia (2): Joshua Reichelt, Dyson Sharp
Vic Metro (5): Jack Dalton, Lachy Dovaston, Louis Emmett, Oliver Greeves, Archie Ludowyke
            Vic Country (1): Willem Duursma
            Western Australia (1): Basil Hart

            POOL B (14):

Brisbane Lions Academy (2): Daniel Annable, Harrison Bridge
Gold Coast Suns Academy (5): Beau Addinsall, Jai Murray, Dylan Patterson, Zeke Uwland, Kalani White
GWS Giants Academy (2): Ryder Corrigan, Harrison Wilson
            Northern Territory (1): Taj Murray
Sydney Swans Academy (2) – Lachlan Carmichael, Noah Chamberlain
Tasmania (2): Jasper Hay, Lucas Wootton

            (Breakdown from Rookie Me).

If he is half as good as his dad, he'd be a walk-up start in our forward line right now! Fingers crossed, he continues to develop (and grow)!

I've found a replay of the game against the Suns, but young James O'Loughlin isn't on the team sheet for that game.

I've no memory of him playing against the Lions. Which doesn't really rule out him playing, as I only saw the last half and I was only slowly working out who the more prominent players were.

Yeah I don't think he played as I've watched 2 games and didn't see him out there. Hopefully he improves and gets in soon!

And by the way, Ryley Sanders of the Allies was awarded the Larke medal as the championship MVP. Certainly well deserved, because he did put together four high quality games. However, the Allies did award their MVP to Connor O'Sullivan, and I think the general feeling is that Sanders' fellow Tasmanian, Colby McKercher, might be taken a little bit higher in the draft.

I've never joined bigfooty, but do occasionally wander over there to look at some of the draft stuff, for whatever they are worth.

The range on Cleary is fascinating. One draft board has him sitting just outside the top 20 post-championships, the rest seem to view him in the 40s to 50s range. One even says him being drafted in the main draft is line ball.

All 3 of those GWS academy boys listed above are from Albury so all open draft eligible.

Noah Chamberlain named All Australian does not make Top 20 but Joel Cochran second in the Top 20 did not make AA. ????

In the somewhat confusing AFL under-age system, it seems that each squad is allowed a handful of over-age players. Of those three Swans mentioned, both Cochran and Nandlal are over-agers. So, I assume that they're not eligible for the All-Australian squad.

There was an U17 game on the weekend between Vic Metro and NSW/ACT. It skipped my mind to watch it, but I think there were seven players from our academy running around. Of those, Rookie Me rated Joe Harrison as the best for NSW/ACT. He also did plenty of good work in the Talent League, as a tough and skilful inside mid.
