He really did. I heard someone at fan day telling him that, and he was very gracious and humble in response.

Sad to see him go - clearly a club and fan favourite. I'm glad he had some good years with the Swans and all the best for the future.

Well done Hickey - You saved your best football for the Red and White. Another big contributor to last year's winning run. But on the other side I am a bit surprised Sammy Reid has not announced his retirement.

In the scheme of things, its not an unreasonable ask.

Hickey mentioned Span dogga and Ant in his speech. Does anyone know who he is referring to? Players or maybe other staff.

When I read the headline I thought we were getting a 'ruck Jesus' emoji, not that he was retiring.
Loved what Tom brought to the team and whilst I was uninspired by trading him in, I am now an unabashed fan.
Best of luck in the future Tom and family

Great article but an interesting point at the end of it sticks out:

There are a few peculiarities with Hickey, all of which are endearing, and the unusual statistic that he's yet to have to a bounce in the AFL across his 149 games is an oddity that stands out.

But he's not expecting that to change between now and the end of his AFL career.

"A few of the boys are telling me to take a bounce, but I said I don't need 15 steps to hit a target. When you've got elite foot skills like me, you don't need the 15 steps," he joked.

"There's only one chance I'll take a bounce and that's if we're 10 goals up in a Grand Final and I can't get dropped."

I really hope that scenario in the last sentence comes to fruition!

One of our few recent drafting coups - he's been a delightfully surprising ripper and it feels like a great clubman to boot.

Hickey was interviewed by one of his numerous ex-teammates in Will Schofield a few weeks ago. Gives a great inside into his background and his self deprecating style of humour.
