I think you're right, BF. Doug Wade used the torpedoes, as did Peter Hudson. I think it was Collingwood's Peter McKenna who really popularised the drop punt kick for goal. But then, like you, my memory may faulty! And only fans of our vintage would recall that there used to be a thing called a drop kick! And a stab pass!!
Peter Hudson kicked flat punts.
