Pyke did a great job changing our ball movement strategy. Will be missed. MMcVeigh would be great. Wonder if Jarrod would be uncomfortable with him there.

Stewie Dew was highly regarded pre Suns - but would we be able to squeeze him into the coaches box?

Mark McVeigh strikes me as exceptional. I thought he did a good job giving the Giants some tough love during his tenure as acting coach, and yet I heard some interviews with him during his time as Allies coach this year, which is clearly more of a nurturing and development focused role. And boy did he have them playing some good footy.

Though how he and his bro would go in the same box, we'd see. (Mind you, I'm of the view, and have expressed on here before, it'd be healthy for J McVeight to experience another club's program if he has senior coaching aspirations).
And I suppose that one good thing about taking over at the Eagles, is that their recent onfield performances are so pathetic, that it's almost impossible for them to get any worse. The only way is up.

No personal knock intended on you or Pyke, but I wonder if this is sometimes overstated.

If you watch some of our second half of 2020 games, you can start to see what the Swans are trying to do - but they have the disruption of a lack of training due to COVID, and a young-ish side that was yet to have the injection of Blakey behind the ball and the talents of Errol, Chad and Campbell - who can all break contests wide opening with pace, power and kicking skills. It was most notable in the end-of-season game against the Cats that we should have won, except for Paps inaccurate goal kicking (but which meant we got access to Logan in the draft, so awesome!).

I've got no doubt Pyke helped, but I think the game plan was already heading there.

Fair call. Forgot about how competitive we were in 2020. Seems like ages ago now and probably blocking out Covid.

                  Agree with you I’m
Quality ball usage under pressure is key to successful teams, and there is no doubt Collingwood benefited from this last season and in the Grand Final. Collingwood and Geelong are two of the oldest premiership teams ever, so there is no doubt experience counts.
Having said that Don Pyke certainly made a significant contribution while he was with the Swans and will be missed

You are correct that we were already trying to execute the game plan before Pyke arrived. However, I recall an interview with JPK saying that Pyke helped communicate to the players how to execute the game plan successfully. He said he dumbed it down or words similar to that.

Just saw this about Pyke. I was confident he was going to stay with us but good luck to him....he's back where he played so that makes sense. I was starting to suspect last season that he was having less influence on our coaching and game plan anyway.

It will be interesting to see who he's replaced with. As others have said, Mark Mcveigh might be worth getting. Can't see Dew returning, despite my wish to see him succeed Horse before he went off to the Suns.

Thanks for sharing, and it’s an interesting insight into how coaching panels work these days. I read something where a coach (might have been Lyon on his return to the system) said 75 percent of the detail of coaching is done by assistants and the head coach in turn guides them, builds direction, fosters trust in the playing group, focuses on selection and then does a lot of match day work to keep things in order and make the big calls. (As well as all his non-footy work ie boards, sponsors, list etc).

It fits with a video the AFL released once of the audio of the two coaches box in the 2020 grand final, where both Dimma and Scott spent as much time asking questions to test stuff, as they did issuing orders.

I’m sure what I’ve said above is a bit of an over simplification of things, but you get the idea.

2 names come to mind to replace Pyke - McVeigh Senior who did a great job in the Academy and with the table topping Allies - and Rhys Shaw who was an outstanding coach for us prior to taking the poison job at North. Happy for either of these to join the coaching team for 2024

Our coaching panel had become stale just before Dew got the job at the Suns. I don't think he would be bringing any new ideas. Look at his last year at the Suns. Their defensive game plan was slow and stagnant. As soon as they sacked him several players from the reserves were promoted, including Flanders, and their game plan became much more attacking. They were far better.

I don't think Stewie would improve our coaching panel. Mark Stone & Mark McVeigh yes. They have both worked under several different Senior Coaches & have had success coaching their own sides.

Saw rumours today that Dew is returning to the Swans. Apparently the reporter with the scoop is Jay Clarke if that means anything in terms of reliability to others

Would rather MMcVeigh than Dew. New blood rather than back to the future.
