Our squad for the u16 championship has been named and can be downloaded by clicking on the link in this article from the AFL site.

    U16s - AFL.com.au

There's some interesting names in there. The only overage player is James O'Loughlin, who is the son of Mickey O. He didn't play last year because of injury, so I don't know how much talent he's inherited, but here's hoping.

There's a couple of other father son prospects, but not for us. Both of whom are playing for our academy, because their fathers are coaching at GWS, but living on the north shore. There's the previously mentioned in this thread, Aidan McCartney, who's the son of Jason and who appears to be a definite key position prospect. Then there's Ethan Kingsley, the son of the Giants coach. Going by his listed size he's probably a midfielder, but I'm not sure if I've seen him play, since the couple of u16 games that I watched didn't have accompanying team sheets. But if he played in those games, he might be pretty good, as our midfield did dominate both the Lions and the Suns.

Another guy that I'm looking forward to seeing go around again is athletic ruck, Mason McGroder, who won the Australian u20 long jump title as a 15 year old.

Their first game is on Saturday in Canberra against the Giants.

Ta, but I'll throw in my usual disclaimer, in that I'm just an enthusiastic fan, rather than an experienced AFL person, so my observations may or may not be accurate.

Well on top in the first quarter, but only in front 21-7. Giants didn't really look like scoring until a goal on the siren. McCartney has two goals from a couple of strong marks.

I'm still working out who's who, so it's a bit early to really say. However McCartney (35) looks a genuine KPF prospect. Strong mark, good kick, seems to read the ball well. Reading the ball well at the other end, Bevis (29) looks promising. I also like McGroder (38) in the ruck and Luke (2) in the forward pocket. But there's other guys doing good things, without me spotting their numbers.

Giants kicked another goal on the siren, to get ahead 28-27 at the main break. The goal was by Tex Longmire from Corowa Rutherglen, so I'm guessing that he's some sort of relation to Horse.
Generally the game has been hard fought, but scrappy, with the Giants using the ball a bit better in that quarter. Our only goal was from Guy Jenkin (20), who's in the side with his twin William (14). Both seem handy, but still a bit skinny. The goal resulted from some nice dash from McGroder in the midfield. Blackwell-Smith (11) seems to getting a fair bit of it. Race (39) looks like he might develop into a strong kpd. Kingsley (22) has done a few nice things. Mickey O's son, James has been playing in the forward pocket and has applied a bit of pressure, but I'm not sure if he's had a possession?

We might have a breeze advantage in the third, so hopefully we can skip away again.

McGroder just kicked a goal of the championship contender. Took the ball out the ruck on the half back flank, dashed away, beat a few defenders, then goaled from 50.

In front 48-37 at the final break. As well as the McGroder goal, there were a couple of goals to Chambers (12) who was probably playing half forward flank. The second was a sharp crumbing effort.

Our pressure meant that we had the better of that quarter, but we missed too many forward targets to fully take advantage. Will need to keep the pressure up, as the Giants might have the breeze in the last.

I just tuned in a few moments ago and saw no.38 in flight. That was impressive. I think he has been watching Blakey!

Ended up winning 69-53. McCartney got his third goal for the game from a mark on the goal line. O'Loughlin got on the board, after a handball found him in space close to goal. While our final goal was from Newman, who had a busy game as on outside mid. Blackwell-Smith was once again busy in that quarter an inside mid.

If anyone wants to see the McGroder goal, go to 1hr 55min and 50sec of the replay.

Wow! Is he rucking? How tall is the kid? That was impressive athleticism!

He's listed as 192cm, so he needs to grow a bit to develop into an AFL ruck prospect. But he has a couple of years to do that. If he only gets to 195cm, he could be an exciting key position player. No more growth and it's highly likely that he'd still be an awesome winger. But from what I've seen of him at this age, the opposition rucks aren't that much taller, and he wins plenty of taps by just leaping higher than them.

On his athleticism, he won the long jump gold in the U20 national championships, as a 15 year old. And he picked up a silver in the U18 400m medley relay. So, you'd think that he'll have to make a decision between athletics and football. Let's hope that he chooses football.
