I watched the game last night, and
- like others, I was very impressed by Reid. He is so balanced and strong through the legs/hips. I recall him shrugging off five tackles, but the commentators said seven (including don’t argue/fend offs?)
- the Eagles were very competitive for long parts of the game and don’t seem like the easy beats of last year, yet Port and GWS hammered them. So we caught them on one of their good days (and there will be more of those for them this year)
- the 26 point margin was a bit flattering for the Eagles because they had very high accuracy with several under pressure snaps, whereas we had several hit the post and some relatively easy set shot misses. Logan and Amartey were very inaccurate if you remove eg, Amartey running into the open goal square off the McLean handball.
- the game was actually entertaining to watch, though very painful to read about online in the first half, very lively and sure we had some stupid mistakes, like Blakey kicking under no pressure to an option player, but there were not lots of frustrating inconsistent umpiring calls. I only remember one for each team that I thought was a bit stiff, late in the second half. How nice to have a game where the umps are not ruining the game!
- Lloyd looked a bit lost out there, outmarked early and only a dozen possessions for the day
- Jordon and Campbell had quiet days, but both had some good moments
- Fox is lively as a forward this season, good to see him have consistently up front
- I said this earlier, but Hayward had one of his best games (auditioning for Crows/Port!) with 18 possessions and 2 goals.
- Mitchell sub situation was a farce to me. He was activated with just under 6 minutes left and didn’t get onto the ground for another 3 minutes of game time as the play was on the other side etc. They should have gotten him ready so that he could come off as soon as Taylor came off, or activated earlier. We don’t gift games or game time, but why send someone interstate for their second game and have them sit on the bench for two hours, and only run on in the final two and a half minutes minutes?
Anyway, watching the game after, knowing we won was actually a pleasant experience!
