    Can you explain the significance?

I was watching the game in the 2nd quarter and was quite worried about the welfare of the Swans players.

There were about 10 occasions when the Swans players went low with their heads over the ball using correct technique only for the Giants to aggressively run straight at them with the intention to hurt them. MCcartin, Melican and Grundy sustained head knocks whilst other situations we’re very dangerous.

The AFL need to investigate the Giants dangerous approach. Obviously McCartin was the unlucky one.

I thought Amartey was much more willing to put is body on the line, he has been very soft in the past. Never forget he was on the best full back in the league. There is not enough praise for Warner in this thread, I though he was sensational , Gulden, Grundy, Heeney and Hayward very good. Also well done Longmire as the Swans adapted to wet Weather play much quicker than GWS. A great little win against a very very good side.

I think Amartey has huge untapped potential. He’s a better centre bounce ruck than McLean when Grundy needs a spell. He’s a pretty decent mark and set shot kick. And he beat Taylor in one on one’s today I believe for the first time this year.

Having said all that our entire fwd line was getting slaughtered until it rained. I don’t know how much was the weather and how much manning up the spare, but the Giants KPDs looked way less assured after Q time.

Ignore that - got it wrong. Games by a player who never received a Brownlow vote. (I forgot to exclude finals.)

There were a few that led with their hips while our blokes were over the ball. It was potentially quite ugly. Even the Himmelberg trip at the end of the third quarter was as deliberate as it gets.

Mind you, it reminded me a bit of the Bombers game. Talking tough during the week, faux tough during the game, but nowhere near tough enough when it mattered. Our blokes were.

Warner was BOG for me, got it right when he took off thru traffic and didnt run into trouble.

The open goal at the end was a reward for the hard running he was doing all day

Just a speculative theory: Ladhams was a late withdrawl from reserves. A bit of me wonders if there’s an issue with Grundy’s eye socket/cheek. He played out the game but that looked like it could be more than a shiner. Let’s hope not but maybe they held Ladhams out as insurance.

The backs got it right. It’s making how organised, calm and connected they are when Rampe is there. I doubt we’ll have McCartin any time soon. It looked too like the Port Adelaide knock for me and that had subsequent repercussions long term.
Watched reserve grade match and while Francis looked the most capable tall down back, his lack of speed and poor positioning worry me against any of the teams over the next 4-5 weeks.
He has already struggled against Freo’s youngsters last year. Curnow and McKay present a real challenge even with McCartin. Hawkins, Henry and Cameron have given us all sorts of problems in the past and Naughton, Ugle-Hagen and Darcy round off difficult prospect.
I am usually more optimistic than that but seeing what has happened to this outstanding family in the past has made me anxious and deeply concerned, not just for our team going forward but for such an upright individual as Tom McCartin.

agree ealier comments re giants "dirty" play knocks to head of swans players, surely mro needs to look at them as well as 4 weeks + for the hit on maccatin. well done boys. Next week do we go for hamlimg against his old club (one of) or for Snell (give another woung guy a go) havent read reserves game comments yet, Parker back for cuninhham (geting past it) thought it wrong to drop campbell and not Harry for Gaints game.

Just for info Snell played another very solid game down back.I have not seen him play a bad game yet. Pretty good for a 18 year old. Amazing the Lions did not draft him.

What a standout performance with such high skill levels with a wet ball and damp ground.

Errol scooping the ball up and kicking it in one ( poetic) motion. Charlie beckons.

My heart stops too when a head is over the ball and an opposing player charges on. Its a tough ol game.

This has to be a real issue for the Giants long term. Of the near 41,000 at the game yesterday I wound suggest at least 40,000 were Swan fans. There was a small group of 200 to 300 in the forward pocket and that was about it based on from where I was sitting in the Brewongle Stand.
GWS get good crowds to their Canberra games, but is this at the expense of developing their presence in the greater Sydney market. This must be a real concern for the AFL.
